The Sibly Report...
Wednesday 20 August 2008
The Queanbeyan Tigers did battle with the Ainslie in all grades at Dairy Farmers Park on Saturday, in what was the last home and away game for the season. The Tigers had a great day taking out all three grades, two of which were against teams holding higher positions on the ladder. The nature of the day was enhanced by the fact the senior grade were playing for the Muir Medal and the Tigers’ 100 Club Function and Premiership Reunion was to follow the game. Both the 1988 and 1998 Premiership teams were honoured. Nature turned on a lovely winter’s afternoon and the occasion ensured a good crowd was there to enjoy the day.
The sad part of the day was that the Tigers wrapped up the game displaying what everybody in the game in the ACT know – the Tigers are a much better team than their season results indicate. The Tigers finished the season the way they started it – playing fast, long, skillful and team focused football. Their play-on football was attacking and positive as opposed to hopeful. Oh, if not for some devastating injuries and for a severe confidence slump!
The Tigers led all day and ran out with a comfortable 36 point win over the third placed team who had the possibility of winning second spot on the ladder, to play for. It was a good team effort. James Kavanagh was on fire at centre half forward kicking long and straight; Renee Ioppi displayed his importance to the success of the team; Andrew Lieschke and Mitch Daniher controlled around the packs; Mark Powell and Andrew Carey worked well together, breaking the packs and supporting each others run forward; and not to be out done the big fellahs, Scott Dickinson and DJ (Daniel Jaques) were too much for the opposition providing their small men good service in the ruck contests and proving too much when resting in the forward pocket.
DJ will be able to retire without regret knowing he is leaving the ruck duties in very capable and exciting hands.

Pictured: Danny being chaired off by brother Roy and Chris Haddock.
The Tigers were harder at the ball and harder in the contests. They wanted to win. Their forwards led well and were well serviced with deliveries to advantage. The day was soured by the loss of Paul Williams in the third quarter with what turned out to be a suspected broken foot. This is probably better than the original scenario of a head injury following his pre season concerns.
The backline held firmly all day, much as they have done all season. Roy Jaques chimed in to ensure his big brother’s last game was a memorable one. Ryan Quade and Kris Thompson stood firm along side Roy.
On the day the Tigers dominated the centre clearances; they moved the ball quickly onto winning targets and ran hard to support each other. The backs were tight and attacking. But most of all the execution of their skills matched their confidence in their ability and in their team mates. More the pity the competition will not see more of them this season.
Queanbeyan: 5.1 8.3 13.6 15.10 (100)
Ainslie: 1.0 3.4 7.8 9.10 (64)

Reserve Grade
The Reserve Grade had a comfortable 48 point win over the Tricolours in a game the Tigers more exhibited the qualities needed to win a game, than for qualities that make for a great spectacle.
The Tigers started with the wind and were playing solid fast football. John Elias demonstrated his experience and quality at centre half back. Both Jordan Longmore and Daniel Jabornik were presenting as good targets up forward.
The Tigers extended their lead in the second quarter when the defence held solid and the talk was supportive and constructive. It was a real team effort and pleasing to the coaching staff as well as to the players. Luke Whatman was working hard up and down the wing, Brett Ormston was breaking packs while Sam Burns was busy in and under and driving the ball forward. Ross Hore was strong in defence against a big opponent. The Tricolours were held goalless with the wind.
Queanbeyan went further ahead in the third piling on 4 goals and again keep the Tricolours goalless. They were working well as a team and the harmony and satisfaction among the team was evident on the bench.
The Tricolours carried the last quarter, 4 goals to 2. The Tigers were not as impressive but they fought out the game running out the last 10 minutes with no fit players on the bench.
While the last quarter result on the board was a bit of a disappointment, the quality of the four quarters overall was pleasing. The Tigers are scheduled to meet the Tricolours in the first final and will be boosted by up to four players from higher duties and injury. Some players will need to make way for these returns but that will also be influenced by the injuries incurred on Saturday. Despite the make up of the team, the game still needs to be won, as anybody who has been around footy long has seen turn a rounds once the finals come, if over confidence is allowed to creep in.
Queanbeyan: 4.4 5.5 10.9 12.11 (83)
Ainslie: 1.1 1.3 1.5 5.5 (35)

Best: L Whatman, I Firns, S Burns, D Jabornik, J Longmore, L Thomspon
Under 18 Grade
The Tigers youthful Under 18 Grade team pulled off a morale boosting win against the top team Ainslie going into the finals. The 5 point win was naturally enough a nail biter and the Tigers displayed great fighting spirit. The Tricolours had pulled level at the 5 minute mark of the last quarter with two quick goals after having trailed from the start. But the Tigers pulled away again when they could very well have been run over.
Final scores read the Tigers 9. 8 (62) to the Tricolours 7. 15 (57) demonstrating the value of accurate goal kicking ability. The Tigers kicked with the strong wind advantage in the first and went into quarter time with a mere 10 point advantage. It didn’t look great for the Tigers especially when the Tricolours started the second full of confidence and attack. But they couldn’t convert as the Tigers kept the pressure on and they were working well as a team to limit the Ainlsie’s shots on goal. The Tricolours couldn’t come to terms with the wind and the shots they did have missed the big sticks. Late in the quarter the Tigers kicked straight for two goals from two shots compared to the Tricolours 6 behinds from their six scoring shots.
Similarly the Tigers struggled to convert in the third. Both teams were displaying good marking skills as the Tigers peppered the goals but ended up with 2 goals 6 behinds for their efforts. At the other end the Tricolours improved their odds and scored 3 goals 3 behinds and had further closed the gap. The Tigers cause had been greatly assisted by a long goal from Michael Redmond on the siren which James Manie had astutely let fly past him.
The Tigers went to the three quarter time break with a 13 point lead but the Tricolours had last use of the wind and had clearly outscored the Tigers in the third. Things didn’t look promising for the Tigers.
At three quarter time Coach Doug Daniel emphasized the need to get the centre clearances and to quickly man up when the Tigers turn over possession. Five minutes later scores were tied and the Tigers faithful were feeling shaky.
Queanbeyan dug deep and built two really good goals through commitment and effective disposal to team mates who really wanted the ball. At the 14 minute mark the Tigers had re-built their lead to 11 points. From there on it was a good tense battle. The Tricolours closed the margin with a late goal as both teams fought to the end. It was a quality win for the Tigers.
Matty Redmond had an excellent game as did Callum Birtles on the back flank. Michael Redmond scored some very good goals. He has an exceptional goal scoring ability. Sam Daniel is mobile and has sure hands. He was influential on the outcome of the game. Simon Kellard stands tall in the backline and pulled in a few important marks at times of high pressure. Dean Ross was active on the far wing, especially in the last quarter. Otherwise, every body pitched in. Such wins only come about by the whole team digging deep at a time when the result could easily slip the other way.
The win was more meritorious given it was done without midfielder Liam Wilkinson. The Tricolours have some very handy big players and the pressure is on the Tigers ruckmen, Jared Priestley and Michael Hardy, to not only negate their influence around the ground and in the centre contests, but to take control away from them, in the games ahead.
The qualities the boys displayed on Saturday are what they need to re-produce if they are to realise the ultimate outcome for their endeavors for season 2008.

Ainslie: 1.2 1.9 4.12 7.15 (57)

Tigers 100 Club – “The Best Ever”
Tuesday 19 August 2008
When the late Alan Muir walked into a Tigers 100 Club Function the room came alive.
He was the living legend and everyone couldn’t wait until it was his turn with the microphone. It was once written in the Queanbeyan Age by a local correspondent attending a Tigers Function for the first time that: “when Alan Muir walked to the stage he was greeted with an infectious and rapturous applause usually reserved for star guest speakers”.
He would have been very proud of his club last Saturday evening.
On show was the best of the best of the current era mixed with some of the best of the past twenty years by way of members of the 1988 and 1998 Premiership teams attending the 10 and 20 year reunions of the respective teams. The venue “The Q” is outstanding and a credit to the City of Queanbeyan. It was a first for the venue to have such a function and won’t be the last.

The evening kicked off with an updated DVD version of the History of the Club tracing events from its foundation year of 1925 through to the current year. MC for the evening was 100 Club Member Paul Walshe and he produced one of his best. As the evening evolved his expert knowledge of each individual receiving an award certainly complimented their achievement(s).
As guests arrived at The Q, they were greeted by current Board Member Rowan Johnstone who took some fantastic photos, as did Travis Longmore, as they entered the function room. Guests then had the opportunity to mingle, view the outstanding display of History Books compiled by Jill, Nicole and the late Alan Bright or listen to the musical attributes of our own Steve Imrie and the highly talented Jeremy Kirkwood (what cant he do !!!!)
They were then requested to enter the theatre for the induction of players / officials into the 100 Club in what has been described as strong showing of the professionalism the Tigers Club is now renowned for. Players inducted on the achievement of 100 Club Games were Josh Davis, Ross Hore, Ryan Quade, Jordan Longmore, Michael Wescombe and Chris Haddock. They were introduced by 300 game player Michael Goiser.
Pictured: Ryan Quade being congratulated by Ron Fowlie.
The next presentation was to Chris Davis on the achievement of 250 Club Games presented by another legend of the Club in Michael Niesen.
Pictured: Chris Davis being recognised by Michale Niesen for playing his 250th Club game.
The introduction of the 1988 and 1998 1st Grade Premiership team and officials in attendance by the respective Coaches Brian Quade and James Dore was preceded by the Clubs Co –Captains Ryan Quade and Renee Ioppi presenting each one with the original Premiership Flags.
Pictured: Current Co Captain Ryan Quade presenting the 1988 Premiership Flag to his father Brian.
Foundation President of the Licensed Club Dave Imrie and former Chairman of Football and now AFL Canberra Chairman Geoff Gosling then presented long serving Administrator Ron Fowlie with Life Membership.

After the break, the Tigers introduced yet another legendary figure within the organisation in Robert Anderson. Ando introduced each one of the 100 Game recipients in attendance before Coach Mark Armstrong inducted Andrew Lieschke into the 100 Club as the only player in 2008 to have reached the 100 1st Grade Game achievement.

The night attracted many people from interstate and they were welcomed accordingly. Past and Present Players spoke during the night and many were choked with emotion when speaking about the Club and their association with it and what it means to them.
The visual presentations provided by Rob Walker Marketing along with the PowerPoint display produced by Jordan Longmore is clear evidence of how proud associates of the Club are of the organisation. Well done to all involved.
It was a grand night and there is no doubt that Alan Muir would have said “that’s the best night we have ever had” and no truer word could be spoken.
Tigers Close Their Season
With A Strong Win Over Premiership Contenders Ainslie
Tuesday 19 August 2008
The Tigers Club closed the business end of the AFL Canberra season for their 1st Grade team last Saturday with a comprehensive victory over Ainslie at Dairy Farmers Park – 15.10 (100) to 9.10 (64).
It was a memorable game for many reasons including the final game before retirement of Danny Jaques, the milestone of 250 Club games for Chris Davis, 100 Club Games for Ryan Quade and the announcement of the Muir Medal being for the Best on Ground during the match. This was a tied vote between Andrew Lieschke and - non other than the man of the moment - Danny Jaques.
Pictured: Danny Jaques (left) and Andrew Lieschke were the joint winners of the Muir Medal.
It was certainly a fitting climax to a fantastic day presented by the Tigers Club concluding with the 100 Club Function that evening at the The Q.
Three wins from three grades on the day with a fantastic victory in the early match by the Under 18 Grade team against the top of the table Tricolours. Finally displaying some of the qualities of a top four team, the young Tigers played a full four quarters including a last quarter onslaught by Ainslie with the wind. They eventually won the match by 5 points – 9.8 (62) to 7.15 (57) but not before providing a few heart attacks in the dying moments of the match.

Pictured: Chris Davis played his 250th Club match last weekend
The Tigers Reserve Grade team won convincingly over the team they will meet in the 1st Semi Final in two weeks time (there is a general bye for all grades next weekend). The final score flattered the Tigers in a game that didn’t reach any great heights with the Tricolours posting four goals in the last quarter to make the score respectable for a final four team. The score being 12.11 (83) to 5.5 (35).
For the Tigers 1st Grade team the 2008 Season is a year of what could have been !!!
The manner in which they disposed of Ainslie last Saturday clearly showed that they are a better team than 5th spot on the ladder.
Ainslie had everything to play for coming into the match including the possibility of second spot and a double chance in the finals. Instead they find themselves in equal second spot with the Sydney Swans and Eastlake. Percentages determine they will finish in third position and face Eastlake in a cut throat elimination 1st semi final.
There are so many could have and should have positions this year.
But quite simply the Tigers were not consistent enough during the year to sustain a final four spot. Injuries certainly played a part during the middle part of the season. But to lose three matches under 14 points (14 to Eastlake, 6 to - Ainslie, and 3 to Tuggeranong) have been costly. They were all winnable and could have had them in second spot on the ladder and a shot at the title. Instead, the Club finds itself reviewing the season.
However if the Tigers 100 Club Function on Saturday night is anything to go by, they will not be missing from the finals action for very long. The night was a huge success and regarded as one of the most professional evenings presented by the organisation in very long time if not ever.
In attendance were members of the 1988 and 1998 1st Grade Premiership teams and they - along with other presentations - were made welcome and introduced to the 170 in attendance. It was indeed a prestigious night complimented by our MC for the evening Paul Walshe who kept the night flowing. This in addition to the visual presentations made.

Pictured: Members of the 1988 & 1998 Premiership teams at last weekends 100 Club Dinner.
The Club was on show and the manner in which all players and their partners presented themselves was a credit to the Tigers Club and the City of Queanbeyan.
As photos come to hand of the night they will be posted on this site. In addition we have a DVD of the 88 and 98 visual presentation available.

Big DJ To Retire
Wednesday 13 August 2008
Pictured: DJ takes a break during last weeks match at the SCG.
One of the biggest men to play in the AFL Canberra competition Danny Jaques (DJ) will retire after the Tigers final match of the 2008 season against Ainslie on Saturday at Dairy Farmers Park. It is fitting that he will finish his career amongst many of his peers having played for Ainslie for two seasons (2004 and 2005) before crossing to the Tigers in 2006.
The gentle giant has been an ornament to the game and hugely popular amongst team mates. A non drinker - this has never stopped DJ from enjoying himself equally with everyone - often seen out in the early mornings after a match in the company of some “sober” gentlemen.
His footy career started out with the Cootamundra Blues in 1992 and has since seen him play for that club on three separate occasions between stints with Wagga Tigers (twice), Port Adelaide Magpies in the strong SANFL, Ainslie and then finally the Queanbeyan Tigers. Along the way he has played Representative football for the Farrer league, Riverina Football League, NSW and the ACT. Those matches, totalled with all games from other clubs equals a whopping 302 senior grade matches. His Queanbeyan Tigers tally being 57 after this Saturday’s game.
Included in his achievements are 5 Club Best and Fairest Awards, 2 Best Player Awards at Representative level, selection in the AFL Canberra Team of the Year on 6 occasions, All Australian Country Selection on two occasions (one each with NSW and AFL Canberra) 2 League Best and Fairest awards including the Mulrooney Medal and three Premierships (2 with Port Adelaide and 1 with Wagga Tigers).
The Tigers are hopeful of retaining his services in some sort of capacity in season 2009 but are certainly not looking forward to carrying the big man from the field after his final hooray on Saturday afternoon.
MUIR MEDAL
Wednesday 13 August 2008
Supporters of both teams are reminded that the MUIR Medal will be presented after the match to the Best on Ground in recognition of services rendered by the late Alan Muir to the Queanbeyan Tigers and his son Ian Muir for his contribution to the Ainslie Football Club. They are the only father son combination to have played over 200 1st Grade Games in AFL Canberra albeit with different clubs with Alan serving his beloved Tigers Club for over 60 years as a player / administrator while Ian continues his involvement with the Ainslie Club by way of its Football Club President.
The announcement after the game will be made by long time friend of the Muir family - Brian Quade.
Tigers Recognise The Past With Reunion Of Premiership Teams and Player Milestones
Tuesday 12 August 2008
Pictured: Old foes or just old faces... Combatants of the 1988 Grand Final Ian Muir and Tony Wynd contest the ball this week at Dairy Farmers Park in preparation for the Tigers Premiership Reunion on Saturday evening at the Q. Muir is now President of the Ainslie Football Club after a stellar career covering over 200 1st Grade games. Wyndie is our living legend and record games holder with 347 1st Grade games and is still actively involved with the Tigers as match day runner and specialist coach.
The Queanbeyan Tigers Club will recognise the 1988 and 1998 Premierships after the Ainslie clash at Dairy Farmers Park at the 100 Club Function on Saturday. Members of both teams will be in attendance at the match during the afternoon but will be formally recognized that evening at the 100 Club Function.
The Tigers 100 Club was formed in 1982 to recognise those players who achieved 100 1st Grade matches for the Club and has since encompassed all players achieving similar milestones whether they are a combination of 1st and Reserve Grade matches or that of only Reserve Grade fixture matches.
Other milestones are also recognised including 150, 200, 250 and where in exceptional circumstances 300 1st Grade or Club matches.
The 1988 Premiership team was Coached by Brian Quade whose legendary status in the Queanbeyan Tigers Club as Coach for ten years is well documented. His fantastic contribution to football includes being the AFL Canberra Representative Coach along with being an AFL NSW Commissioner.
During the summer of 87 / 88 the Tigers lost untold amount of players and were destined for the scrap heap according to many football experts. The likes of Peter Scully, Robert Anderson, Michael Kennedy, Barry Sucking, Darren Walton and Ian Male – to name a few - were to leave the Club for varying reasons but mainly employment opportunities interstate. The Tigers managed to recruit two former NSW Representatives from Sydney in Allan Mapleson and David Skuta. They also added Brett Schmidt and Craig Nielsen along with the inclusion of two players from the lower grades the previous year being Gavin Doubleday and Ray Callan. Steve Vizy and Michael Goiser also stepped into the ranks from the Under 19’s. It was a rebuilding year that turned out to be a premiership season under the watchful eye of Quadie.
Similar circumstances surround the 1998 premiership year when James Dore took over the Coaching position from Brendan Roberson. The Club was devastated with heavy losses over the summer months of 97 /98 including Roberson, Jamie Almond, Bill Neely, Graham Fellows, Brett O’Malley plus the retirement of Roger Cuschieri, Allan Mapleson, George Stevens and Craig Hall. It was further hampered when three young players recruited over the summer months walked away during the lead up of the opening match of the season. In addition Michael Niesen informed the Club during the same week he was returning to Adelaide due to a work transfer. (Arrangements were made for Nieso to fly back to Canberra every weekend to play in 1998).
The Club was gutted but, as with any strong football organisation they rose to the occasion winning their first eight games of the season to entrench themselves at the top of the table. Again many youngsters from the Under 19’s were to be important players in the premiership year including, Doug Wynd, Renee Ioppi, Paul Higgs and Rod Gisik. Add Tony Wolski, Jon Elias and Damian Wadley from the NSW ACT RAMS program and the Tigers had developed a strong blend of youth and experience under the watchful eye of James Dore.
This Saturday Night the Club will remember the 20 Year Anniversary and the 10 Year Anniversary of the above mentioned Premiership victories.
The 100 Club Function will also recognise the achievement of playing 100 Club Games by Ryan Quade, Chris Haddock, Jordan Longmore, Ross Hore, Josh Davis and Michael Wescombe. Chris Davis will receive recognition on the achievement of 250 Club games and Andrew Lieschke will be inducted into the 100 Club on the playing of his 100th 1st Grade match.
This should be a fantastic night to be held at the new theatre in Queanbeyan – The Q and will be hosted by Marketing Manager of ActewAGL Paul Walshe – who is also an Associate 100 Game player of the Tigers Club.
A special DVD presentation courtesy of Rob Walker Marketing will also be presented.

Tigers Stung But Not Wounded
Monday 11 August 2008
Pictured: The Tigers players in front of the members stand at quarter time.
The Tigers may have succumbed to a superior Sydney Swans Reserve Grade team on Saturday at the SCG but they won the admiration of many at the ground for their determination and willingness to play out their second last match of the season. With the knowledge that Eastlake had defeated Ainslie by two points earlier in the day - effectively snuffing out any chance the Tigers had of making the four - they could well have just played for the sake of playing.
But they did the opposite against a quality Sydney Swans team.
Pictured: The team heads out of the changerooms for the match.
On show were three players appearing in the top grade for their first appearance at senior level. Once Sam Burns recovered from the knowledge he couldn’t park his car on the hill inside the SCG - he provided plenty of zip around the ground. Jackson Brooker was not out of place posting a last quarter opportunist goal and Beau Watts tried valiantly after being included from the emergency bench taking the place of an ill Jeremy Kirkwood. “Kirkys” pace was seriously missed.
Pictured: Sam Burns, Beau Watts & Jackson Brooker all made their 1st Grade debuts on the weekend.
The game opened at a cracking pace. There was some quality football on display as both teams sought to gain the early ascedancy. The Swans, having been bolstered by the return of both Nick Malceski and Ed Barlow into the Reserves team were full of run and obviously keen to impress the senior selection committee.
Although marginally in front at the quarter time break the Swans opened up a four goal lead mid term of the second quarter only to be pinged back by two goals early in time on. The Swans were once again allowed two easy goals close to the half time break (both from free kicks) to establish a four goal margin.
After the main interval, the Swans piled on a couple of early goals but the tenacity of the Tigers once again found them well in the match at the three quarter time break even though down by 13.10 to 8.13. Many in attendance deemed that the marquee players (the protected species) of the Sydney Swans team could do no wrong by way of those in charge. Both teams had been wayward at goals posting 3.6 and 2.7 respectively.
The last quarter was a goal feast with the Swans piling on an accurate 7.1 to the Tigers 4.1. The quality of play drew applause from an appreciative crowd.
During the game there were many strong efforts. James Kavanagh had certainly come to play taking some excellent grabs against quality opposition. Although a little wayward in his kicking he still managed four goals for the day. In the ruck Scott Dickinson rose to new heights with some excellent tap ruck work to his on ball brigade led by Mitch Daniher, Chris Walmsley, Mark Powell and the two Andrews - Carey and Lieschke. Paul Williams regained some form and gave his opposition something to think about ending with two majors.
Up back, Kris Thompson, Ryan Quade and Roy Jacques provided plenty of bounce out of defence. The duel between these three players on opposition players of the caliber of Jesse White, Ed Barlow, Matthew Beckmans and Dean Terlich was a feature of what was a high quality contest.
The return of Mat Cavedon certainly added some toughness and enthusiasm to the Tigers team. His opening minutes of the game resembled letting a Tiger out of a cage on open prey – well he had been locked up for two weeks due to work commitments!!
The Tigers were outclassed on this occasion. The likes of Nick Malceski, Matt O’Dwyer, Nick Fosdike and Brendan Murphy were to much too handle. But the Tigers will take a lot from this match for their last encounter of the season against Ainslie at Dairy Farmers Park on Saturday.
Coach Armstrong viewed the game from the box for the first time in many years after suffering a leg injury the previous week against Eastlake. Although disappointed with the result he could not falter the player’s endeavours on the day. The Coaches also has to contend with managing an extra two players on the bench while giving everyone time on the field. This is not an easy gig when trying to provide equal opportunities for all players to show their worth at the end of what has been a difficult and disappointing season for a quality list of players.
It’s a long same day haul by bus / car for the players and coaching staff. It’s certainly a long day when arriving back to minus 4 at 2.00am the next morning.
Our thanks and appreciation to those that did travel and assist in a voluntary capacity on the day.

Under 18 Grade
Back in sunny Canberra the Tigers Under 18 grade side did battle with Marist College at Marist on Saturday in a match which would determine second spot on the ladder behind Ainslie. Unfortunately the Tigers did not come to play. After establishing an early three goal lead at the quarter time break they could only manage one further goal to the home teams 13. This is an extremely disappointing result for this quality bunch of youngsters.
They now meet the competition leaders Ainslie next Saturday who are favourites for the title. The Tri-colours have defeated the Tigers in their last two encounters albeit by small margins. If the Tigers are on song, this should be a great match to witness from 9.30am.
There were few players to stand out last weekend. James Manie continues his good form with two goals from limited opportunities. Liam Wilkinson is an exceptionally gifted player and is the linchpin for this side’s finals prospect. Hayden Kelly is developing into a handy player for the Tigers and his progress next year will be keenly watched. The smiling assassin Alex Cuttiford is also one to watch down the track as is Ryan Price, the Redmond brothers and big Chris Barry who is returning to form at the right end of the year.
Queanbeyan: 3.2 3.4 4.8 4.9 (33)
Marist: 0.5 6.8 8.11 13.16 (94)
Goals: J Manie 2, C Barry 2
Best: H Kelly, L Wilkinson, A Cuttiford, R Price, M Redmond, C Barry
Tigers To Restore Some Pride Over the Next Two Weekends
Friday 8 August 2008
With only two rounds remaining of the AFL Canberra home and away series, the Queanbeyan Tigers will be out to restore some pride this weekend when they take on the Sydney Swans Reserves at the SCG as the curtain raiser to the Swans / Fremantle Clash. They then meet Ainslie at Dairy Farmers Park on Saturday 16 August in their last match of the season which will be played in front of the 1988 and 1998 Premiership players who will be attending a reunion of their respective titles. The Muir Medal will also be played for during that game. The Medal being awarded to the Best on Ground in recognition of the wonderful contribution given by Alan Muir to Queanbeyan and that of his son Ian to Ainslie.
Much has been said about the Tigers failure to win a top four position this year after probably having their best list of players for many years. Footy can be a cruel game. In a somewhat demanding sport any number of excuses can be made. But simply the team as a whole did not gel sufficiently during the year to be worthy of a crack at the title in September.
Against the Swans on Saturday the Tigers will have to perform at their very best if they are to take the points against a strengthened Sydney outfit. Relegated from the Swans senior side will be Luke Ablett, Jess White and Ryan Brabazon with the expected return through the Reserves of Nick Malceski from injury.
The Tigers will miss the on field leadership of Coach Mark Armstrong – injured during the last quarter against Eastlake last weekend. Returning to the team after two weeks absence due to work commitments with the Australian Navy is Matt Cavedon.
Making their senior grade debut this weekend is former 2002 Under 18 grade Premiership player Sam Burns and the dynamic Jackson Brooker. Both players have been in fine form over recent weeks with “Jacko” receiving a good report from Sydney Swans Reserves Coach Brett Allison after playing with them as a top up player last weekend against Tuggeranong. Beau Watts will also debut if called up from the emergency list.
It is particularly pleasing to have Sam Burns back within the Tigers ranks after a 6 year layoff. His blistering pace and determined ability to obtain possessions will be a real boost to the Club this week and in years to come. Their inclusions add to the already long list of players who have made the debut in 1st Grade this year: a list which includes James Manie, Liam Wilkinson, Steve Foden, Jared Daniel, Paul Slater, Sam Burly, Tim Cook and Matt Redmond. Youngster Sam Daniel has also featured at senior grade level this year with the Sydney Swans Reserves as a top up player.
Pictured: Sam Burns will make his First Grade Debut tomorrow against the Sydney Swans Reserves.
The Tigers will feature in this years finals series with the Clubs Reserve Grade team in contention for back to back titles. Under the guidance of Adrian Pavese this team has progressed through the season under all types of adversity with players being promoted regularly to prop up an injury plagued 1st grade team. However last weekend with a strong compliment of players they accounted for the inform Eastlake team and although having the bye this weekend look forward to their encounter the following week against Ainslie.
The Tigers Under 18 Grade side are in a four way battle for a spot in the four. Ainslie are well clear of this group on top of the ladder with the Tigers, Marist, Belconnen and Eastlake fighting for fourth spot. Such is the closeness of the competition; the four will not be decided until the last round of matches.
The Tigers play Marist on Saturday for the third time this season at Marist which is a distinct advantage to the College team: Unfortunately due to the draw they play at the same time the Tigers Senior Grade group of players and officials are travelling to Sydney. The match is scheduled for a 1.30pm start on Saturday.
Thanks to our volunteer group who have given up a chance of visiting Sydney and in particular the SCG: instead to attend to the Under 18 Grade team.
The Thomas Wills Round – Celebrating 150 Years of Australian Football
Tuesday 5 August 2008
Australian Football has played a significant role in the life of most Australians and is a massive part of our community. Thursday, August 7 is a very important day in football’s history, marking 150 years since the first recorded match of Australian Football.
It was back in 1858 that Tom Wills helped create the rules and the framework of the game that so many of us have now had the privilege of watching and participating in. To commemorate this milestone, the AFL has scheduled a number of special events during the week: two of these are Kick Around Australia Day and the Tom Wills Round.
The Tigers Club have a special part of the history of our great game. Although disappointment reigns at the moment with the realisation that our senior grade team may not be part of the AFL Canberra Finals Series in 2008, we can be justly proud of our participation in the competition since its inception in 1924.
The Tigers Club is the oldest Club in the League formed in 1925. It has one other fact that few within our club let alone throughout football circles realise and that is the following:
Thomas Wentworth Wills – the above mentioned founder of our game was born in the Queanbeyan / Molonglo area in 1835 thus we have an attachment to the origins of the Australian Football Game.
Tigers Group Photo
Monday 4 August 2008
The Tigers Club recently gathered many of its associates and players for a group photo at Dairy Farmers Park.
Prior to the Sydney Swans Reserve Grade game Volunteers, Sponsors, Senior Grade players and Juniors in attendance gathered in front of the grandstand at the ground for the photo organised by Rowan Johnstone with photography taken by Travis Longmore.
The photo represents the enormous contribution many people offer our organisation and that of AFL in general.

New Gold Coast Recruit with a Tigers Connection
Friday 1 August 2008
Charlie Dixon – Does that name ring a bell ?
Probably not - unless you are following the path of the proposed Gold Coast AFL team - or you’re a member of the Quade Family. During the past week three young Queenslanders are part of the first intake of players to sign with GC17 in anticipation of the new club entering the AFL Competition in 2010.
Jesse Haberfield, Jack Stanlake and Charlie Dixon are all members of the Queensland Development team named the Scorpions of which played in the Under 18 Grade Division Two Championship Carnival held in Melbourne recently.
Charlie Dixon is the great nephew of our own Brian Quade and hails from Cairns. He moved to Brisbane this year to play for Redland Bombers of the AFL Queensland League and has obviously impressed selectors with his athletic 200cm frame and his outstanding work ethic and strong hands as a key forward. His Coach, former Collingwood player Matthew Francis said “he has all the attributes, the character and the grounding to have an outstanding AFL career”.
Obviously with those types of attributes it runs in the family genes. The Tigers club have been fortunate to have many family members from the Quade dynasty represent the Club at various levels including current senior grade players and cousins Dennis and Ryan Quade, the latter the 1st Grade co Captain.
In the past, other cousins have donned the black and gold include Jeremy Quade, Sam Quade, Anthony Quade, Leo Lucas, the late Dane Quade and Jack Lucas.
Pictured: Ryan Quade in action for the Tigers this year.
Dixon, who has only played football seriously since 2003 could embark on an AFL career similar to two other relatives being his grandfather Tom who played for North Melbourne and his great Uncle Rick who Captained South Melbourne before moving to Sydney to be the first Coach of the Swans. Queensland Under 18 Grade Coach Neville Millar said he was a “big wrap” for Dixon who played representative basketball before moving to AFL. “He is an exciting prospect who is going to turn into a very good player” he said.
“He is capable of taking a big grab, is a fierce competitor and doesn’t like getting beaten”.
