Player Losses

Player losses continue to be of major concern to the organisation with the latest being Anthony Roy who along with his partner will be moving to Brisbane early in the New Year. ‘Ant’ joined the Tigers from Wagga four seasons ago and has been an important player over the years in both grades. Employment has restricted his 1st Grade opportunities however he did manage to post 49 1st Grade games during this time. We wish Anthony all the best for his new venture.

Two of our very best youngsters are also moving on with Ryan Quade accepting a position on the supplementary list at the Sydney Swans and Kris Thompson moving to Werribee Tigers. They are both huge losses to our organisation after they both had excellent years in 2004 – Ryan winning the Tigers Under 21 Grade Best and Fairest Award, being determined by 1st Grade votes whilst Kris played the majority of the season with the NSW/ACT RAMS. Both were members of the Tigers 1st Grade Grand Final team.

Jamie Andriske and Club Captain Jason Gilbert have both announced their retirement and along with the league’s most prolific forward line player in the history of the league, Michael Niesen who announced his retirement prior to the Grand Final, are also major losses to the Club. ‘Nieso’ may show his face in the Reserves (we hope).

Triple Premiership player Tony Wolski is also a big loss, with “pigeon” deciding the cold weather did nothing for those huge legs of his and he also moves onto Brisbane.

On the positive side there are five players joining the organisation from the Marist Under 18 Grade Premiership team - Tim Robb, Duncan McLeod, Steve MacPherson, Tom Hollis and Patrick Leahy, whilst our own crop of Grand Final Under 18 players will be moving into the senior grades including last years leading goals kicker Brett Freund, Best and Fairest winner Joe Sibly and runner up in the League medal Simon McInnes.

Steve Klein joins the Club from Bomaderry, Mitch Daniher from Turvey Park with the expected return of former players Dennis Quade (overseas), Josh Parson and Kane Cawse from Harman, Adam Pumpa, Sam Burns and DJ Walker from injury expected to bolster our numbers.

Pre Season training

The Club commences pre season training on Monday 10 January at 6.00pm gathering at the Manuka Swimming Pool for our first meeting of the year. Thereafter training continues at the Margaret Donoghoe Sportsground each Wednesday and Friday at 6.00pm.

New Players are welcome. Inquiries can be made by phoning the Clubs Football Office on 62993467.

Geoff Gosling steps down

The Tigers current Chairman of Football Geoff Gosling has stepped down from the position of AFL Canberra Director after eight years. Geoff has been a stalwart of Australian Football in Canberra and has decided to have a break from the Development of AFL in the Canberra Region to concentrate on his employment with ACT Government and his position as Chairman of the Queanbeyan Tigers.

Premiership Reunion

Queanbeyan Tigers participated in their first Grand Final in 24 years in 1985 and were successful when they defeated Ainslie by 59 points, ending a period of 45 years between premierships* – the previous one being in 1940.

2005 marks twenty years since that victory and a huge gathering is expected to attend a reunion of both the 1st and Reserve Grade Premiership teams of 1985 which will be held in conjunction with either the Tigers 100 Club Dinner on August 27 or its Presentation Night on September 8, 2005. The date to be confirmed early in the new year.

Legends such as burly full forward Brian “Butch” Hemming, dynamic rovers Stephen West and Michael Kennedy, the elusive Richard Burge and Peter Scully and dogged back pocket Mark Thompson are certain to attend along with Leo Lucas (who will ever forget his two long range goals in the third quarter). The Bowyer Brothers, Captain Geoff Harrold, Darren Miller and Brad Wharton along with many others names are entrenched in the Tigers History after that incredible victory. Coaches of the day were Brian Quade and Snapper Briant. The reunion promises to be a beauty so keep watching for a confirmed date.

* The Club combined with Acton for the period 1952 – 1956 for five successive grand finals delivering three premierships.
