BLAST FROM THE PAST
THE YEAR 1965
The election of office bearers for the 1965 season took place in August
of 1964 to enable the newly elected committee to work over the summer
months raising finances and securing potential recruits in an attempt
to compete against the wealthier clubs across the border.
Lester Donoghoe was elected President. Vice Presidents included George
Schow, Jack McNamara, Basil Donoghoe, Vic Sagacio, Tom Hunt, George Sims.
Stalwart Bob Griffin was elected to the position of Senior Grade Coach
for a fee of 200 pounds. Griffo had played 139 First Grade
games for the Tigers and had been of the toughest centre half backs to
don the black and gold jumper. On the announcement of his appointment
Griffo very generously donated 100 pounds towards an end of season trip.
Canberra Clubs were continually enticing players from the Tigers in the
early sixities with the likes of recognised players Ern Hincksman, Ken
Williams, Alan Rogers and R Moore all joining the strong Ainslie Club,
Jim Bradshaw crossing to University and Maurie McDonald to Acton.
Eastlake were making strong overtures to the Tigers young star Mal Wheeler.
He remained with the Club in 1965 securing the Best and Fairest Award
along the way.
The Committee had problems approving clearances of its better players
to Canberra based Clubs considering the low standing of the Club in the
competition in recent years.
In attempt not to have any controversy in approving the clearances the
Committee passed the following resolution:
Players - who being married and resident in Canberra for 2 years
at the end of 1965 and after applying for a clearance be favourably considered
by the committee.
The Club continued to slide down the ladder in 1965, securing the wooden
spoon for only the second time in the Clubs 42 year history. They notched
only two wins for the season being hampered during the year with consistent
injuries to their better players.
Captain Coach Bob Griffin and Vice Captain Peter Schow played their 150th
and 100th First Grade games respectively against University at the Park
Oval on 17 July, the game between the two bottom teams resulting in a
rare win for the Tigers 10.12 (72) to 6.14 (50).
Mal Wheeler secured the Tigers 1st Grade Best and Fairest with the runner
up being Marion Borowski. Over 200 players and officials attended the
Tigers Presentation Night held at the Leagues Club auditorium.

The Tigers did not field a Reserve Grade team but did however field a
team in the newly formed Third Division and were placed on top of the
ladder, winning the minor premiership in the last game of the season.
They were subsequently defeated in the second semi final 6.13 (49) to
5.5 (35), apparently taking the field with only 16 players due to the
fact that a number of the teams younger players were involved in the Colts
semi final on the same day. The team then succumbed in the Preliminary
final 12.6 (78) to 7.9 (51) to Acton.
Whilst the Senior Grade Club struggled the Junior Organisation was thriving
with many players being selected for Representative honours.
Mick Charlton highly regarded as one of the best prospects in the
district represented Canberra in the Sunkick long distance
schoolboy carnival at the Carlton Football Club ground in Melbourne and
was placed second kicking 152 feet to the winners 165.
He was selected in the Under 14 Schoolboys team to play in the State
Carnival along with Alan Bailey, Colin Imrie, John Abel and Robert Elliot.
As a result Charlton was the sole selection from the ACT in the NSW State
team to play in the Australian Schoolboys Championships.
Six Tigers were selected to play in the ACT Under 18 Grade team
Renato Res, Bill Lilley, Ben Skurowski, Phil Hawke, Terry McInnes, and
Alan Williams whilst Reg Netting was the Coach. Four players were selected
to play in the ACT Under 19 Grade team Renato Res, Ziggy Prkyiel,
John Buckley and Marion Borowski.
The Tigers crack Sub-Juniors team were defeated in the Grand Final by
Ainslie 6.8 (44) to 0.8 (8) after going through the season undefeated.
The Clubs Junior and Midget teams also made the finals.
Of the above mentioned Junior players the following went on to have outstanding
careers with the Tigers: Col Imrie 161 1st Grade Games and Club Treasurer
for six years, Marion Borowski 104 1st Grade games, Renato Res 150 1st

the purpose of building a licensed club.

Union Club.
