Pre-season comp Round 1 results
Wednesday 16th March 2005
The Queanbeyan Tigers had a mixed weekend in the first round of the Carlton
Draught AFL Canberra pre-season competition, losing to Sydney Swans first
up and then overcoming Wagga Tigers in their second game.
With former Tiger Ryan Quade playing for Sydney and a number of senior
Tigers unavailable, the Swans defeated a young Tigers outfit 6.10.46 to
Queanbeyan 5.8.38. The Tigers used the opportunity to give a number of
last seasons Under 18 players a taste of senior football, with Brett
Fruend, Simon McGuiness, Joe Sibley, the McLeod brothers (Duncan &
Scott) all benefiting from the experience. Returning to the Tigers this
season, Dean Foden seemed to overcome his knee problems that have plagued
him in the past and former Marist players Steve McPherson, Tim Robb, Patrick
Leahy and Paul Campbell acquitted themselves well. Mitch Daniher, a new
Riverina recruit also performed well in his first game for the Tigers.
In its second game, Queanbeyan were too accomplished for Wagga Tigers,
who seemed to suffer from playing two consecutive matches in the hot conditions
at Margaret Donoghoe Oval. Final score: Queanbeyan 12.11.83 Wagga
Tigers 8.3.51.
In other weekend results, Eastlake defeated Wagga, Tuggeranong defeated
Weston Creek, Ainslie defeated Tuggeranong and Weston Creek defeated Belconnen.
The second round of matches will be played this weekend, including three
games at Margaret Donoghoe Oval, Queanbeyan on Saturday see the
draw on this web site for details.
