Swans at Large at the Tigers Den
Monday 21st March 2005

The Sydney Swans Reserve Grade will be in full force at the Queanbeyan Tigers home ground on Saturday in the second round of the AFL Canberra Pre Season Competition with the inclusion of senior grade players Adam Goodes, Nick Davis, Jared Crouch, Jason Saddington, Ben Mathews and Luke Ablett.

With the AFL having a weekend break before the competition proper commences on Friday 25 March, the Swans Management have included the above mentioned senior grade players in their Reserves team to allow the players to gain match fitness after interrupted preseason(s).

Goodes – the 2003 Brownlow Medalist will have a run in one or both games the Swans are involved at Queanbeyan against Wagga and Eastlake after missing the AFL’s Wizard Cup due to injury.  The 25 year old star has carried knee injuries for the majority of last season but has gained the all clear for this weekends match(s) which will clearly establish the Swans as favourites to enter the final of the AFL Canberra Pre Season competition if all the above mentioned players take the field on Saturday.

The six players have a combined total of 696 AFL games between them. There is a distinct possibility that one of the other Swans stars Michael O’ Loughlin will also be playing after deliberately being left out of every practice match as part of a maintenance program for tendinitis problems with his knees.

Swans Senior Grade Coach Paul Roos will also be at the match to gauge whether the above mentioned players will be fit for selection for their first round encounter against Hawthorn the following Saturday at the SCG.

John Longmire, the Swans Senior Grade Assistant Coach and Coach of their Reserves team is more than pleased to have such a contingent of quality players to select. Local AFL fans have a great opportunity on Saturday to witness some of the best players the Swans have to offer which should ensure a healthy crowd in attendance.

The Tigers play Eastlake at 1.00pm with a curtain raiser trial match at 11.00am between last years Under 18 Grand Finalists – Tigers and Marist.

The full program for Saturday is:

11.00am - Under 18 Grade trail match – Tigers v Marist
1.00pm - Queanbeyan v Eastlake
2.25pm – Swans v Wagga
3.50pm – Swans v Eastlake

Queanbeyan should have the likes of Luke Ellis, Renee Ioppi, Brett Nolte, Jack Charlton, Adam Heading and Scott Dickinson all available this weekend after missing last weekend’s pre season games against the Swans and Wagga.
