MATCH OF THE SEASON (2004)

Under 14's win Grand Final in 2004!

Queanbeyans Under 14 side take to the field in their 2004 Grand Final against Marist

The Sleepdoctor sponsored under 14's made their way to Manuka Oval on a cool Saturday morning to attempt to win their third premiership in a row and with the support of a great Queanbeyan crowd came away with a brilliant hard won victory.

The game was a scrappy affair in the first quarter with the ball becoming wet very quickly and the pressure and nerves showing as the usually sure ball handling of the young tigers letting them down.

This in turn put pressure on the backline as Marist worked the ball into their forward area, but Callum Birtles, Ben Rabjohns, David Hogan, Daniel Male, David Sturgiss, Andrew Downey and in particular Matthew Redmond playing brilliantly to repel the ball into our forward line with great skill and desire.

The midfield and forwards were working hard but their opportunities where limited and the bigger ground taking a while for them to adjust to. The second term was a carbon copy of the first with play shifting between half forward lines and neither team being able to assert their authority over the other.

Tigers win the ruck contest

The third and premiership quarter was when the young tigers started to control the game with captain Jared Priestly in the ruck, Jeremy Kirkwood, Jeremy Fitzgerald, Ben McKenna, Daniel Male, Luke Cheetham, Bradley Toone and Michael Redmond on the ball and in the midfield creating plenty of drive into the forward line.

Matthew Redmond, David Hogan and David Sturgiss across the half backline where virtually impassible and the tigers went into the final term just in front but with their tails up. The forward line of Nathan Reid, Brad Simpson, Brant Cameron, Robert Kell, Matthew Hilder, Chris Barry, Angus Ashworth, John Noonan worked overtime to keep the ball in their area until a major was scored.

Queanbeyans Under 14 team celebrate their well deserved Grand Final victory

The final term saw the tigers playing their brand of team football, kicking and handballing to each other and playing with great spirit to record a hard fought 28 point victory.

each player is to be commended and congratulated on their efforts throughout the season and the winning of the Tom McLeod Shield is a suitable reward for the work done all year.

Final Score

Tigers 10.9-69 Marist 6.5-41

Matthew Redmond was awarded the Best player on the ground and his four quarter effort was outstanding.
