The Quade Cup
Queanbeyan Tigers match against the Sydney Swans on 1st May takes on
added significance with the introduction and presentation of the inaugural
Quade Cup to be played between the two Clubs each time they play
one other at the home of the Tigers.
The Quade Cup to recognise the outstanding contribution brothers Rick
and Brian have given to the Sydney Swans and Queanbeyan Tigers respectively.
Rick was the original Coach of the Swans on their controversial move
from Melbourne when as South Melbourne they were relocated to Sydney in
the early eighties. Prior to this he had played 164 games for South Melbourne
posting 111 goals. He held the position of Captain for a period of three
years from 1977 Representing Victoria and then Coach for three years before
resigning in mid 1984. He remains as a Board Member of the Swans today
and has given outstanding service to an organisation that has been threatened
with extinction on a number of occasions yet today, thrives on an enormous
supporter base Australia wide.
Brian enjoyed a tremendous ten years as Senior Grade Coach of the Queanbeyan
Tigers during which time the Club participated in a remarkable eight consecutive
Grand Finals from 1985 to 1992 winning the Premiership on four occasions
the first of which was in 1985 after a 42 year drought. He continues
his involvement with the Tigers today as a member of the Clubs Operations
Committee and has progressed as one of the leading Administrators of Football
in the District holding down positions of Chairman of the NSW / ACT Sapphire
Coast Regional Board, as a Member of the Manuka Oval Trust and as a Commissioner
of the NSW / ACT Board of Commissioners. His involvement in ACT Football
also includes being Representative Coach for a long period annexing the
Fosters Shield a competition between NSW, Tasmania, Queensland
and Victoria.
The Quade Family has had significant contributions by way of playing
members with Queanbeyan with all three sons of Brian Sam, Dane
and Ryan having donned the black and gold whilst nephews Jeremy, Anthony,
Dennis, Leo and Jack Lucas all taking the field at some time over the
past twenty years.
