WHEELER JOINS TIGERS

As a back pocket player, Terry Wheeler developed a reputation as a tough player from Warburton whose ruthless approach endeared him to many of his Footscray fans in the then named Victorian Football League – now AFL.

He started as a rover and in his first game was given a hiding by the legendary John Rantell. (This statement as recorded in the official Encyclopedia for League Footballers).

From then on his place was in defence - apart from the occasional forays up the field. His tactics sparked controversy when he was frequently the second party in tribunal cases. In one season he was witness at tribunal hearings five times, but only once was the opposing player suspended.

Terry Wheeler played with plenty of heart and enthusiasm between the period 1974 to 1983 during which time he accumulated 157 matches, then after Coaching the Club during the tumultuous events of the aborted merger with Fitzroy.

His beloved Bulldogs (now known as the Western Bulldogs) have again sought his tremendous enthusiasm as motivation for their match against Adelaide in Melbourne on Saturday 23 April 2005 particularly for this being the occasion of - one their other great players - Chris Grants 300th game

What does this have to do with the Queanbeyan Tigers one may ask?

Simple.

Terry Wheeler - who recently accepted employment at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra has also accepted to assist the Tigers Club as a Specialist Coach for Season 2005.

His enthusiasm and tremendous ability to communicate with players is an enormous gain for the Club and is looked highly upon by all involved in the organization and indeed by those from other AFL Canberra Clubs.

At the moment he is restricted to attending only Wednesday Night training sessions (until he adjusts to his new employment and the cold !!!!) however he intends using this time to provide guidance to Tigers Coach Mark Armstrong. In his own words, “the more the Coach learns, the better the players will be”.
