New Chairman of Football
The Tigers Club recently appointed a new Chairman of Football to replace
the long serving Geoff Gosling who retired from the position at the Clubs
recent Annual General Meeting after being at the helm for seven years.
Gosling a former player of the Tigers in the late seventies has had a
long and distinguished career with the Club being actively involved with
both the Junior and Senior Organisations since his move to Queanbeyan
in 1975. In addition he has served the ACT Junior Australian Football
League in a number of official capacities but more recently has been a
member of the AFL Canberra Board of Management as well as being on the
ACT / NSW Sapphire Coast Regional Board.
His recent retirement from the AFL Canberra Board as well as Chairman
of the Tigers Football Operations brings to an end a wonderful and successful
period for both organisations which includes - for AFL Canberra - a complete
restructuring process including the formation of a four man Board to administer
the respective AFL Canberra Competitions and the movement of its headquarters
from Football Park to the boutique surrounds of Manuka Oval now
the home of AFL in the Canberra District.
At Club level, Geoff joined the Tigers Club as Chairman in 1998 and enjoyed
success with three consecutive Premierships (1998 2000) and then
the disappointment of three Grand Final losses (2002 2004). Under
his direction and guidance the Club has become one of the most successful
sporting organisations in the district.
His legacy is sure to continue under the Clubs new Chairman Bob Gibbs.
Although Bob has not directly been involved with the organisation for
quite a considerable amount of time his appointment comes as no current
committee person(s) was available to take on the role due to family and
business commitments.
Bob is a former player of the organisation and is renown for his role
as Chairman of Selectors in the Premiership team of 1985 being the first
time the Club won the title in 42 years as its own identity. His two sons
Greg and Mark both played for the Tigers and wife Lyn just
loves the footy.
Now retired, Bob Gibbs was a former Senior Manager of ActewAGL having
experience as a District Engineer. His management skills and personal
no nonsense approach to matters will certainly bring a different authority
to the organisation in respect to the mild mannered Geoff Gosling.
Geoff will not be lost to the organisation staying on the Football Management
Board for the Year 2005 whilst also maintaining a position on the Regional
Board. .
Also departing the scene will be Phil McClure who as Treasurer has held
the position for the past four years. A young family and commitments as
the Junior Tigers representative on the Licensed Club Board of Directors
has limited his time available to remain as financial consultant to the
football teams. His replacement will be Liz Jaspers, who becomes the first
lady to be elected onto the Tigers Football Operations Committee. Liz
has a background in accountancy and is the partner of popular Football
Administration Manager Jordan Longmore.
Also joining the Tigers Committee will be Mal Corcoran who has switched
codes since his son commenced playing AFL at St Edmunds College before
joining the Tigers four years ago. Mal a Rugby League convert is
now well entrenched in the Tigers Organisation and looks forward to an
active involvement.
The Annual General Meeting saw the resignation of long time auditor and
past player Col Imrie. After many years, Col has decided, (due to work
commitments) - that he would not be able to continue in this role and
steps down after providing the Club with an enormous support base of financial
control and advice. He will be sorely missed and we pass on our thanks
and appreciation to him for his efforts.
The Football Operations Committee is:
Chairman Bob Gibbs
Vice Chman Roger Cuschieri
Secretary Mark Thompson
Treasurer Liz Jaspers
Committee: Guy Mertz, Glen Morrison, Mal Corcoran, Geoff Gosling, Patrick
Exton and Brian Quade.
Football Manager: Ron Fowlie
