The
NSW PSSA (Public Schools) AFL State Championships were held at the Tigers
home ground last week attracting young Australian Football players from
all over the State.
Eleven
teams representing Regional Public School Areas such as: Riverina, South
Coast, Hunter, North Coast, Barrier, Sydney South West, Mackillop, Polding,
Sydney East, Sydney North, and Sydney West.
Young
players as far away as Broken Hill travelled with their respective school
regions and families to Queanbeyan for the three day State Carnival.
Queanbeyan
District PSSA volunteered to host the event and along with Championship
convenor Carol Duvall from East Queanbeyan Public School and Australian
Football Convenor of the NSW PSSA Greg Tunn, the Carnival produced some
exciting football and some seriously talented youngsters.
At
the conclusion of the Carnival a team of 23 players was selected to compete
in the School Sport Australia Exchange in Canberra later in the year.
In addition, a Development Squad, mainly for the younger players of the
Carnival was selected to take part in an extensive coaching camp during
the July holiday period.
Regional
Sports Organiser Ross Fuller spoke highly of the Queanbeyan Tigers Club
facilities at the Margaret Donoghoe Sportsground which catered for the
event estimated to have attracted at least 1,000 players and parents each
day. The Clubs Junior Organisation operated the canteen over
the three day period from 7.30am through to the close of business each
day at 3.30pm and then washed and dried eleven sets of jumpers ready for
the next day.
It
was a huge operation for the Clubs strong band of volunteers and they
are to be congratulated for the outstanding contribution during this time
led by Junior Club President Judy Mustard.
Many
of the Clubs Under 18 and Under 15 Grade players assisted in goal and
boundary umpiring over the period during which 32 games were played.
Some 50 dozen eggs and 30 kilo of bacon were cooked for the popular egg
and bacon rolls and some 300 healthy salad rolls were made.
Young
Sam Jensen from the Tigers Under 12s who participated in the South Coast
Team was selected in the Development Squad along with Callum Gardiner
from MacKillop (who also plays in the Tigers Under 12s).
The Tigers Heath Cameron was considered unlucky not to have been selected
in either one of the two squads after suffering leg soreness during the
three day event.
