TIGERS NEWS - 3 AUGUST 2005

History in the making

History in the makingThis great photo was taken after the 1999 Grand Final during which the Tigers recorded their second consecutive premiership. They were well on their way to equal the long standing record of the 1939, 1940 and 1941 Premiership teams of which they did by winning the year 2000 Premiership title.

Now you may ask the significance of the photo.

Well, all five individuals are recipients of the Alex Jesaulenko Medal for Best on Ground in an AFL Canberra Grand Final.

The big bloke to the left is the Tigers Legendary former Coach Brian Quade (now Chairman of the NSW ACT / Sapphire Coast Region Board and Commissioner on the NSW / ACT Board of Management for the AFL) who won the Medal in the 1981 Grand Final at Football Park when playing for Manuka as their Captain Coach.

The next in line is another champion player for the Tigers in Doug Daniel who won the Medal in the 1988 Tigers Premiership team when they defeated Ainslie in the Grand Final – the final score being 14.10 (94) to 10.15 (75).

Undoubtedly, one of the best players ever to have donned the Tigers colours is that of Tony Wynd who achieved so many records that you had best look up the Tigers Wall of Fame page on this website to read all about him. “Aussie” collected the Best on Ground Medal for his performance in the 1990 Grand Final which the Tigers actually lost to Ainslie 16.12 (108) to 10.21 (81).

Next is the man that came to the Tigers from Adelaide under an arrangement that he would only stay one year. 12 years later Michael Niesen has established his own League Record as the player who has kicked the most goals in AFL Canberra History. He won the Jesaulenko Medal for a Best on Ground performance in the 1998 Grand Final won against Belconnen 10.10 (106) to 12.18 (90).

The Tigers repeated the 1998 win over Belconnen in the 1999 Grand Final defeating the Magpies 13.13 (91) to 10.14 (74) with the mercurial Bill Neely picking up the Best on Ground Jesaulenko Medal. Bill now resides in Adelaide and has collected the last two Best and Fairest Awards at the Glenelg Football Club.

Four other Queanbeyan Players have won the Alex Jesaulenko Medal: Ian Bowyer (1985), Troy Gray (1991), Jason Brown (2000) and Jamie Andriske (2003).

It certainly was a tremendous photo taken on a Mad Monday – so all eyes were not quite adjusted to the bright sunshine in yet another great Premiership victory for the Tigers Club.
