Tigers Hammer home final pre season victory
In their final hit our before the AFL Canberra competition commences
next weekend, the Queanbeyan Tigers defeated last years Sydney Football
League Premiers North Shore at Greenway Oval last Saturday.
Playing in gusty conditions, the Tigers were far to accomplished for
their more fancied opponents in what was the conclusion of the AFL Canberra
Pre season competition. The Sydney Swans Reserves carried on with their
2005 premiership form easily accounting for a youthful Tuggeranong Hawks
combination in the Grand Final of the pre season competition played at
Ainslie Oval winning 24.18 (162) to 5.5 (35).
At Greenway, the Tigers played without ten players who are expected to
be regular senior grade players in season 2006 including ACT Representative
players Mark Armstrong, Ryan Quade, Luke Whatman and Jon Elias –
all of whom are carrying injuries at the moment. With the exception of
Whatman, most are expected to play against the Swans in the opening encounter
next Sunday.
The Tigers won the match against North Shore kicking 14.11 (95) to 6.6.
(42), after leading at halftime 7.5 to 4.4. A decisive third quarter during
which North Shore failed to score secured an easy victory for Queanbeyan
with notable performances coming from live wirer forward line played Brett
Fruend who posted five goals and the strong marking Josh Davis who took
some spectacular marks. Luke Ellis in the centre is providing the forward
line with many options while Andrew Lieschke and Mitch Daniher were again
amongst the Tigers best players - as they were during most of the 2005
season.
The Tigers are now gearing up for a first round encounter with the Sydney
Swans next Sunday at the SCG. Training has recommenced at their home ground,
the Margaret Donoghoe Sportsground after restoration work commenced in
January and they are looking forward to displaying a number of new faces
in the team for this weeks match. Tickets are available from the Tigers
Football office for the Swans v Port Adelaide match – which is sure
to attract a huge crowd to witness the unveiling of the Swans Premiership
Flag(s) – the Tigers playing the curtain raiser match at 9.45am.
