Big Mac proves big hit
Chief awarded for role model performance
By WOFF Greg Smith

The story below tells of current Reserve Grade Coach Jamie "Mac" McGinley's success in his career as Navy Chief in the Australian Defence Force. Mac came to us at the beginning of 2006 after a 12 month stint in Iraq, although the Tigers have been after the former Harman Coach for a number of years.

Navy Chief CPOCIS Jamie Mac McGinley was given a rare accolade recently when he was made an honorary Sergeant Major in the United States Army Signal Regiment.

It is believed that CPO McGinley is the only Australian Navy member ever to be given this distinction.

CPO McGinley, who served with the Multi National Force-Iraq from February to August this year, made such an impression on his management and peers during his time at Camp Victory Iraq that he was handed this honor during an emotional farewell function.

CPO McGinley, who went to Iraq to fill the NCOIC role for the Communications and Information Systems Coordination Centre-Iraq, found himself without a job when he arrived, as the position had already been filled by a US military member.

So when a few weeks later the section Sergeant Major suddenly left, CPO McGinley stepped in and took up the reigns.

It didn t take long for CPO McGinley to become a well-known figure among the many service personnel around the Camp Victory complex. He built a tremendous rapport with many service personnel from the various nations, services and rank structures.

When asked about the contributions made by CPO McGinley, US Army Colonel Michael Bradley, Director of the Communications and Information Systems Coordination Centre-Iraq said; It was a pleasure to have CPO Jamie McGinley in the Multi-National Force Iraq.

CPO McGinley was recognized by all for his upbeat demeanor, professionalism and his concern for the daily health, welfare and safety of the troops.

From coordinating daily operations to visiting coalition troops in the hospital, big Mac brightened up everyone s day where ever he went. Sergeant Major Wilburn E. Ferguson of the US Army Signal Regiment, who worked closely with CPO McGinley during his time in Iraq, developed a great friendship and respect for the Chief.

In reflecting on the achievements of CPO McGinley, Sergeant Major Ferguson said, His enthusiasm was infectious; he always had a great attitude and positive approach to all issues. He tried to take care of all of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that he came in to contact with. He exemplified what a Sergeant Major, what a true leader should be.

It would be privilege to work with Mac again; he is a true professional and I consider him a good friend.

As well as this award, CPO McGinley won the praises of all he was associated within the Iraqi Theatre and was formally recognised by Uncle Sam with the awarding of the US Army Commendation Medal.
