High Schools AFL
Karabar and Queanbeyan High Schools descended upon Margaret Donoghoe
Sportsground last Friday for the first of three Australian Football
games between the two High Schools in 2006.
The teams were doing battle for the Tony Wynd Shield. The shield
was named after Tony Wynd, being a former Captain of Queanbeyan
High School and legend of the Queanbeyan Tigers Football Club.
The teams were made up of students in the Year 10, 11 and 12 age
groups. The game was played in great spirit, with both teams showing
a lot of skill and flair for the game, even though not all are regular
AFL players.
Karabar High School won the match 7 6 (48) to 5 8 (38) although
Queanbeyan High certainly showed that they were more than capable
of taking the match. Jeremy Fitzgerald was the standout from both
sides until he was injured in a nasty collision in the dying moments
of the match.
A feature of the match being strong marking by both sides. Karabar
High School eventually showed that they had too much pace and skill
for the Queanbeyan High lads. Congratulations to both sides on a
terrific match.
The second of the three matches will be played on 8 September with
the third and final match being staged on 3 December. The matches
hopefully preparing both High Schools in readiness for a proposed
competition involving all High Schools and Colleges in the District
to be conducted by AFL Canberra Development in the new year.
