Tuesday June 13th
The 2006 Glenn Archer Cup

On Tuesday 6th June 7 teams travelled to Margaret Donoghoe Oval to compete in the Glenn Archer Cup Queanbeyan Zone Day. Schools from all over the district, including QBN public, QBN East, QBN South (two teams), QBN West, Jerrabomberra and newcomers Bungendore, all made the effort to get there for what turned out to be an absolutely fantastic day of AFL in Queanbeyan.

The reigning premiers, Queanbeyan East public School looked like the favourites but the loss of a number of key players into the high schools probably affected them more than initially thought. Newcomers Bungendore showed early in the day that they were definitely contenders for the final, winning their early matches with conviction. A great level of commitment was shown by the QBN South teams who showed that they are continuing to improve each year. QBN West was probably unlucky to miss out on the final; they played the undefeated QBN public in their final game which allowed the Bungendore boys in for a shot at their first ever title.

The Final for the day was played between QBN public and Bungendore in front of all of the other schools, who stayed to watch what an excellent match of football. The lads from Bungendore were one of the few teams that were competitive with the highly skilled unit from Isabella. But in the end the QBN public boys ran out winners, the final score being: QBN public 7.3 (45) def. Bungendore 3.4 (26).

All teams showed a high level of skill and sportsmanship, with the Development Manager for the NSW / ACT AFL, John Dickie commenting “There was a great level of participation shown by the schools community in Queanbeyan to have seven teams competing and the sportsmanship shown by all competitors was wonderful to see”. A big thank you to all competitors, teachers, schools and parents for their assistance on the day. The Queanbeyan Tigers would also like to thank the following: Melanie Edwards (and her mother), Lynne McKenzie and Marie Lawrence for their assistance in the canteen & handing out packs, Tony Edwards for coaching assistance, the NSW / ACT staff that assisted on the day and finally the QBN High School boys from the Elite Sports Program who helped in all capacities on the day.
