The Tigers Club hosted the third day of the Barassi Youth International
Tournament at Margaret Donoghoe Sportsground on Tuesday night with
teams from New Zealand, South Africa, ACT and a magnificently presented
Kormilda College team on show during two night time games.
Kormilda College is a team of young indigenous players from the Top

from the many spectators in attendance for their wonderful skills
and tremendous ball getting abilities.

ever International AFL match ever played at the Margaret Donoghoe
Sportsground - the match being played against New Zealand.
However, great applause followed the fortunes of the South African
team as they did battle with the ACT Blue team. The result of the
match favouring the home team in the dying seconds of the game.

President of the Tournament Organising Committee Mr Mark Cloney praised
the teams on display during the evening and the organising committee
for conducting such a wonderful opportunity for players from overseas
and remote areas of Australia.
He gave the Queanbeyan Tigers Club a fantastic tribute
by according the Club one of the few football organisations in the
District to get behind the tournament which has included the Junior
Tigers Club catering throughout the week at various venues, supporting
fundraising activities leading up to the tournament and also our general
support since the inception of the competition some eight years ago.
The
Tigers Club have promoted players from other countries within its
organisation over many years including the recruitment of two Samoan
players in the late ninties - in addition to the sponsorship of the
Fasito Tigers – a team in Samoa.
The Club more recently recruited Jeremy Blyth and Nathan Rose from
New Zealand, “Jezza” winning the Clubs Best and Fairest
Under 18 Grade award in his first year with the Club.
In attendance at the Barassi Tournament on Tuesday evening were legendary
former AFL player / Coach David Parkin and also AFL Game Development
Manager Kevin Sheehan.

Parkin
applauded the organising committee for assisting the development of
junior football emphasising good sportsmanship and competitiveness
but more importantly, it promotes racial and cultural exchange amongst
the world’s youth.
This was highlighted when members of the New Zealand and South African
Teams joined in song after the final match - as one group - in tribute
to the Queanbeyan Tigers Club for its support during the night.
Further matches are being played on Thursday 5 October at the Duntroon
Ovals from 12.30pm with the finals of the competition being played
at the same ovals on Saturday from 10.00am.
