Dream Run Comes to an End!
The Queanbeyan Tigers U12s squad
dream run in Season 2007 has come to a heartbreaking end, going down
to rivals Belconnen in the Grand Final at Kingston last Saturday by
just 1 point. In some controversial circumstances, teams were asked
to stay on the field with no officials from either team approaching
the boys until goal umpires could confer scores. After 5 minutes of
tense pause, with all of the Queanbeyan faithful holding a collective
breath around the ground, officials awarded the match to Belconnen
by 1 point, much to the chagrin of the Tigers.
Queanbeyan Coach Bruce Camp couldn’t
have asked for a team of more dedicated footballers on the day, with
every boy giving 110%. The standard of football was very high, with
the lead changing many times during the match. Every Tiger could hold
their heads high after the game, although the disappointment on every
face of the young Tigers was evident for all to see.
There were some high quality passages
of play from both sides and you certainly could tell the Tiger boys
had been practicing their goal kicking – they booted 6.1 for
the entire match! Better contributors were Alec “Safe as Houses”
McCormick, who must have been in bed early on Saturday night with
leather poisoning; PJ Maher also banged a few very handy goals that
kept the Tigers in the hunt for the silverware and Kieran Shea, who
seemed to be everywhere and used the football very well under pressure.
Toby Yeates would have had the same illness as Alec after he took
an absolute truckload of marks and shut down an opposition key forward
for much of the match. And once again Troy Rootsey’s hardness
at the ball was admired by both Tigers supporters and the opposition
– he was always ready to go in and get the ball for the Tigers,
a feature of his football this year.
It was a disappointing end for
the boys who had performed so well during the year, maintaining their
unbeaten status right up until their final match. But all of these
young men can hold their heads high after showing so much dedication
and commitment to their team and you can be sure that all at the Tigers
organisation are extremely proud of these boys!
Congratulations to Coach Bruce
Camp and Manager Tracey Hespe for their own dedication to these boys
and hard work throughout the season. Last but not least, congratulations
to all of the boys on such a great match and an excellent season of
football.
