Tigers Sign another Daniher - The Wagga
Connection Continues.
Tuesday, 7th December 2004
The
Tigers Club are pleased to announce the signing of Mitch Daniher, a playing member of the
NSW / ACT RAMS program. He is a member of the Daniher Dynasty - a name synonymous
with AFL both at the highest level in Melbourne and in the Riverina district
of NSW.
The
Tigers long association with the Wagga District continues with the signing
of Daniher who joins his brother Brett
at Queanbeyan after playing the majority of the junior career and short
senior playing days with the Turvey Park AFL Club .
Brett
Daniher,
after signing with the Tigers earlier this season, suffered major shoulder
damage in one of his typical non-stop tackling efforts of which required
surgery. He has vowed to have a great year in 2005 alongside his younger
brother Mitch aged 18.
Both
players are quality in and under players with plenty of speed, a factor
the Tigers have been missing in recent years.
The
name Daniher is not new to the Tigers with their Uncle - Rod Daniher - a quality player in his
younger days (who had Represented NSW) teaming up with the Tigers Club
in the early eighties.
The
Tigers Wagga District connection has resulted in some outstanding players
joining Queanbeyan over many years with the most notable being Club Best
and Fairest 1st Grade winners Keith "Butch" Thompson - who won the award in
1955 & 1956 - originally from Griffith, Peter Scully - who
won the award in 1986 - originally from East Wagga, Barry Suckling
1987 - originally from East Wagga, Jeff Gilbert 1989 & 1992 - originally
from Ardlethan, Mark Armstrong - current Coach and winner of the B&F in -1996, 1998 &
2002 - originally from East Wagga, and, Jack Charlton 2004 - originally from
East Wagga.
Brothers
Leo and John Lucas, also hail from the Wagga District and they along with an
ever flowing surname of Quade players have graced our fields from that
area.
Probably
the best known player (eventually) from the district to have joined the
Tigers would have been Wayne Carroll, who at seventeen transferred from the Ganmain Club
in 1977, going on to have an outstanding career with the Sydney Swans
as a high flying forward line player.
In
addition, current players of the calibre of Andrew Lieschke (Mangoplah), Lewis Roberts
and
Brett Nolte (Coolamon), Anthony Roy (Wagga Tigers), Chris Davis (East Wagga) Josh Davis
(Collingullie) and James Geale (East Wagga) make up a strong contingent of quality
players to have donned the black and gold.
Let's not forget the quality coaches
who have also had an involvement with Wagga and Queanbeyan including four
time premiership Coach Brian Quade who took charge of the Tigers in 1984
and then proceeded to guide them into eight straight Grand Finals from
1985 through to 1992 for Premierships in 1985, 1988, 1989 and 1991. The
1985 being the Clubs first appearance in the premiership decider since
1961 and it-s first Premiership (as Queanbeyan) since 1941. (The Club
combined with Acton in the fifties to win three Premierships in 1953,
1955 and 1956). Quadie had Coached East Wagga before moving to Canberra
to Coach Manuka in the late seventies.
Another notable Coach with the Tigers
who had an association at one stage with Ganmain was that of Kevin
Delmenico
who held the reigns between 1976 and 1980, a period of great revival for
the Queanbeyan Club.
It may seem all one way traffic down
the highway from Wagga to Queanbeyan but some notable players have joined
Wagga and District Clubs over the years after stints with Queanbeyan.
Mark Blundell had
a strong influence with East Wagga, Cian Ebert Coached Griffith to a recent Premiership,
whilst Jon O'Dwyer - a playing member of the 1989 and
1999 Tiger Premiership teams also Coached Griffith into a Grand Final.
