Life Membership of AFL Canberra awarded to ALAN MUIR
23 December 2004

The Tigers living Legend Alan Muir has been honoured once again for his contribution to AFL in the Canberra / Queanbeyan region with Life Membership of AFL Canberra.

He becomes only the third person associated with the Tigers Club in its 80 Year History to be acknowledged in the category of Life Membership. The others being Jim Prendergast* (1947) and Frank Hopkins* (1975).

The announcement of the Life Membership to Alan Muir was made at the AFL Canberra’s Annual General Meeting by President Ron Cahill who spoke with enormous passions of Alan’s involvement and association with Australian Football.

His association with the Queanbeyan Tigers spans over 60 years and includes Administration roles as President, Secretary, Chairman of Selectors, tribunal delegate (1985 – to current), and long time publicity officer with the Queanbeyan Age (1950 – to current).

On the playing field he represented the Tigers on 225 occasions until the record was broken by an equal legend in Tony Wynd and has since been eclipsed by Michael Goiser, Doug Daniel and Robert Anderson all of whom are recognised by Muir as possibly four of the best players ever produced by the Tigers Organisation. He played in the Grand Finals teams of the highly successful Queanbeyan/ Acton Combine featuring in three premierships during that era plus the next losing grand final of 1961.

He has been honoured at the Tigers Club with inclusion on the Tigers Wall of Fame, gained Life Membership in 1985 and was one of the instigators in the now very prestigious Tigers 100 Club formed in 1982 to recognise player achievements within the organisation.

In 2000, the ACT Sporting Community recognised his magnificent commitment to Sport with admittance to the ACT Sports Hall of Fame - as an Associate Member, whilst he was also awarded by the Australian Government with the Australian Sports Medal in the same year.

Known for his rich sense of humour, he is the ultimate club person. Both passionate and loyal, he epitomises the spirit of the Tigers Club and is loved by “all and sundry” in our organisation” says Club Chairperson Geoff Gosling.

The announcement of Life Membership came as a complete surprise to Alan who went to the Annual meeting to witness his son Ian being appointed to the AFL Canberra Board of Management only to be completely humbled by the prestigious award.

He is the Tigers “living Legend” and at age 74 does not even contemplate retirement from the Club he loves so dearly.
