Solid performances for all grades!

A one-point win to the Eastlake Reserve Grade team was the only game lost over the weekend from 5 matches. The Tigers were successful in Men’s and

Women’s 1st Grade over Eastlake. The same for the Rising Stars Under 18 Grade with a three-point win over the Demons – all games played at Football Park. At Allinsure Park, the Tigerettes Reserve Grade easily accounted for Belconnen Magpies on Saturday morning.

Tigers Men’s 1st Grade

On a cold but relatively calm Friday night, the Tigers Men’s 1st Grade completely overwhelmed their opponents to record a convincing 62-point win at Football Park.  It was possibly the best game the Tigers have produced in several years and with exception of the first ten minutes of the 1st Quarter, they were outstanding for the full game. There were very few players if any who didn’t contribute to a significant victory.   It was a hard-fought tough contest with both teams playing strongly, but it was the Tigers defence that withstood a constant barrage of attacking moves particularly in the first half of footy.

Matthew Grocott’s dominance up forward resulted in five goals as he played havoc with his opponents. Christian Palombi was fantastic throughout as was the work load of Jeremy Bridger who battles every week against much taller and stronger opponents in the ruck but his maturity in this position since joining the club is to be commended.  Alex Page was another who was lively around the ground particularly around the forward line. His two goals were gems. Lachie Highfield was exceptional as was Dean Simpson until leaving the field early in the third term with a concerning leg injury.

Tim Clowry had a role to play and he did that to perfection. The late withdrawal of Jack Carroll-Tape allowed Tim Shea to return to the team and he didn’t disappoint. Liam Greenwell was a class act in the backline as was Ryan Worn at fullback often sending the Tigers into attack. Brandon Lagana and Jed Simpson played strongly throughout.

The win now places enormous emphasis on the final two games of the season – both being played at Allinsure Park – (against Belconnen and Ainslie)

– all three clubs vying for a top two finish.

Tigers Men’s Reserve Grade

In a low scoring match the Tigers Reserve Grade Men’s team fell one point short of retaining top place on the competition ladder. Remarkably after being down by three goals at half time, they powered their way back into the match holding a slender lead in the last term only for Eastlake to post two late points to take the match.

What’s remarkable is the fact that those two scoring shots by Eastlake were the only scoring shots for them in the last half of footy after the Tigers had dominated proceeding with 23 excursions into their forward fifty to just seven by the Demons.

Bailey Greenwood was again outstanding along with Aiden Bowyer and Alex Godfrey who is finding some form after an extended early season holiday.  Wilson Morshead was equally impressive while Grant Worner was strong in defence. Costly concussions to Tom Flight and Jordan Gay in the final quarter emphasized the hardness of the game and how close the two teams are matched. Their first-round encounter resulted in a Tigers win in one of the lowest scoring games of the season – 3.7 (25) to 2.8 (20).

The Tigers have must win matches in the final two games of the season if they are to finish in a top two position – they play Belconnen and Ainslie, meeting the Magpies this Saturday at Allinsure Park.

Under 18 Grade Rising Stars

The Rising Stars caused the upset of the weekend with a three-point victory over Eastlake in the early match at Football Park last Saturday. With several inclusions in the team, they were able to match it with their more fancied opponents.

It was a tough encounter throughout and full credit to both teams for playing in the manner they did. It was a low scoring match in freezing conditions which hampered the talent on display to show their undoubted abilities. However, is was an enthralling encounter. Only 9 points separated the teams at the final break after the Tigers had posted 1.6 during the third term.

The Demons peppered their goal in the final quarter, but it was their turn to be inaccurate posting 1.6 to the Tigers solitary goal.

Sam Robinson played his best game for the year and he along with Ben Thurling, Nick Coghill and Wayde Derksen were standout performers in an overall team effort.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

The Tigerettes had their hardest game for the year in near perfect conditions in the afternoon game at Football Park on Saturday.

Up against second placed and reigning Premiers Eastlake Demons, it took until the last quarter to finally outplay a tough opposition and eventually post a comprehensive victory. At three quarter time the scores were level and an upset were on the cards, but thankfully there was a dramatic lift. The Tigerettes posting six unanswered goals in the last term.

Jackie Parry continued her excellent form up forward kicking 8 goals. Jade Hamilton took control in the last half dominating her opponents with a polished display. Tarni Evans gave a solid all-round performance along with Megan Godfrey whose experience provided the lift required in the last quarter to take charge of the game. Cass Taylor, Ella Ross and Georgia Stephinson also deserve mention.

Another huge game this Saturday up against the now second placed Belconnen Magpies who have been slowly improving throughout the season.

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

A solid opening quarter posting 5 goals paved the way for a comprehensive win over the Belconnen Magpies on Saturday morning at Allinsure Park.  In very cold conditions, the Tigerettes quickly adapted to the conditions outclassing their opponents with a polished display of teamwork to win by 79 points.

It was a welcome return to the field for Teena Campbell after spending most of the season overseas. Teena ran amok posting 4 goals and being adjudged best on ground for her efforts.

It was great to have former Tigers player Joe Kolano in attendance to watch his daughter Alanna in the black and gold. Joe having played in the seventies with the Tigers in an era of great hardship but when many friendships were made and still exist within the Tiger ranks. Best of all, Alanna was among the best for the Tigerettes.

Welcome back also to Bec Brown and she along with many others deserve a mention for the manner in which the Tigerettes played last Saturday. They include Morgan Margosis, Kate Reid, Hannah Verris and Kristen Turner.

Tigers continue build up for Finals with strong results!

4 wins from 5 last weekend with comprehensive victories to the Tigers Men’s and Tigerettes 1st Grade plus Men’s and Tigerettes Reserve Grades. The

Tigers Rising Stars Under 18 Grade team went down to the Tuggeranong Hawks.

Tigers Under 18 Grade Rising Stars.

The early match at Allinsure Park last Sunday featured the Tigers Rising Stars up against the big improvers of 2019 in the Tuggeranong Hawks. The scores don’t indicate the quality of the match even though the home team was defeated by 48 points.

Inaccuracy early for the Tigers and an amazing 4 goals straight to the Hawks in the 1st quarter followed by a further 8 goals straight in the final two quarters blew the score line out in favour of the Hawks.

Wade Derksen (who featured briefly in this team mid-season last year) has returned and with his flare is sure to come under notice by senior grade selectors. He has impressed during his past two matches and with a permanent move to Queanbeyan has him poised for a strong season in 2020 in the senior ranks.

Brad Rauter is another who has impressed in recent matches since his return from injury and representative duties. He is another who could follow in the footsteps of other Under 18 Grade players who have been promoted into 1st Grade this season.

The young Tigers never gave in on Sunday with others prominent in the defeat being Ben Thurling, Hugh Clark, Sam Robinson, the high-flying Ollie Rowley and in his usual manner Jordan Gilbert.

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

The Tigerettes Reserve Grade became the first ever Queanbeyan team to play at Yass, where they met “half way” in a match against Cootamundra. On a very foggy and cold morning both teams ran onto the ground and quickly disappeared, being frequently seen before the fog lifted.

The Coota Ladies played well throughout with a full complement of players and gave the youthful Tigerettes a strong contest. As with the Tigers Under 18 Grade team, inaccuracy featured (if that is a feature) and interestingly both teams are coached by the same coaching group – something to think of guys!!.

The Tigerettes were best served by Melissa Hurley, Hannah Verri, Julia Bedin with Chelsey Hamilton being the main goal kicker with 2 goals.

A huge thank you to our volunteers who traveled to Yass on Saturday and then backed up again on Sunday. In particular to Tim Stephinson for once again blowing the whistle.

Men’s 1st Grade

The Tigers have moved back into second position on the ladder with an emphatic win over the Hawks. They produced a blistering open term with 8 quality goals. This quarter undoubtedly set the win up for the Tigers. The remainder of the match saw the Hawks display a stronger attack on the ball restricting the Tigers to just a further 12 goals for the game.

Easily a feature of the match was the debut of three players playing their respective first 1st Grade game for the Club. Jayden Cutts (after an injury riddled season) claimed a senior grade spot after posting 10 goals the previous week. His didn’t disappoint with 3 goals to his credit last Sunday. Former Marist College student Hugh McKenzie made his debut in 1st Grade since joining the Club in 2017. This very popular young man has been a constant performer in the Reserves and deserved his elevation into the senior grade.

The final player making his debut would be the second youngest in the Club’s history.

In attendance to present Josh Fahey his jumper would be the youngest player ever in the Clubs 95-year evolution in James Black.  Proudly wearing his Tigers 100 Club blazer, James reflected on his first game 50 years ago in 1969, a completely different time for the Club when struggling to compete in the League often being defeated by 20 to 30 goals every week.

James went onto win four 1st Grade Best and Fairest titles, was a member of the famous ACTAFL Representative team that defeated the VFL (now AFL) at Manuka Oval in 1980 and playing 191 1st Grade matches before injury halted his career. In presenting Josh his jumper, he reminded the youngster to concentrate on any deficiencies he may have to make sure he gives himself every chance of a successful career in our great game.

The Tigers had 10 goal kickers against the Hawks, including three each to Brett Fruend, Jayden Cutts, Matt Grocott and Alex Page. Grocott being adjudged best on ground followed by Tyler Collins who probably played his best game for the Club. Other notable performances came from Christian Palombi, Ryan Worn, Jed Simpson, Campbell Lovell and Toby Conroy.

Tigers Men’s Reserve Grade

The Tigers Reserve Grade team have moved back to top of the ladder with a 24-goal win over the Hawks posting 13 goals in both halves of footy. The Hawks lost a few players during the match with injury – hence the score blowout – however much to their credit they never stopped trying.

Justin Galloway made a return to footy after weeks out through “a self-inflicted” injury posting 5 quality goals. Aiden Bowyer dropped back from seniors for the week collecting four goals for his efforts. Scott Lancaster and Bailey Greenwood continue to place pressure on the senior grade players with consecutive strong games as does Alec McCormick and another to drop back in Jack Carroll- Tape.

Fantastic to see Luke Thompson get the opportunity to play alongside his stepson Bailey Greenwood – both being named in the best. Thomo seems to have been around the club for decades but due to work and family commitments hasn’t been a regular through the years, but he has certainly made up for lost time with an impressive performance in front of many family and friends.

The last game of the day would see the Tigerettes maintain their unbeaten season holding their opposition scoreless while posting an impressive 90 points themselves.

Tarni Evans has made a welcome return and was explosive around the field sending the Tigerettes into attack on countless occasions and posting 3 goals along the way.  Up forward Jackie Parry dominated with 4 majors to her name. The Hamilton’s Jayde and Lexie were both prominent as was Ashlee Jakim and Ruby Grounds.

Over the final three weeks before finals, they will play all other finals contenders in Eastlake, Belconnen and Ainslie and will be looking continue their strong form with a number of players to return who were unavailable last week.

Tigers Women’s 1st Grade Coach Re-appointed!

The club has been thrilled with how the women’s program has been tracking in 2019 due largely to the influence Head Coach Chris Clifton has had with the squad.

This is why the club is pleased to announce that Chris has been re-appointed for the 2020 season.

Along with his other coaches, Chris has both squads flying and regardless with how the rest of 2019 pans out for both teams, there is no doubt the Tigers Women’s program is going to go from strength to strength under his leadership.

The success of the program has also allowed multiple players the chance to play 1st Grade Football in 2019 with well over 40 players having played at least one senior game. Added to this are the 6 current Youth Girls from their 2018 Flag also progressing through the ranks into senior footy.

The club congratulates Chris on what he has acheived thus far and are really looking forward to seeing how the program progresses over the next 18 months under Chris’s leadership!

Now that both Men’s and Women’s 1st Grade positions have been confirmed it is hoped in the coming weeks all other coaching roles will be finalised.
