100 Years of ANZAC holds special significance

The recent ANZAC 100 Year Commemorations has seen a number of Queanbeyan Tiger associates being acknowledged and represented at home or in Gallipoli.

Jock McAulay

One of the Tigers longest serving supporters (who rarely misses a Tigers encounter), George “Jock” McAulay featured in a Canberra Times article after his attendance at the Queanbeyan ANZAC Day Service.   George is a former Royal Australian Airforce Sergeant and was joined on the day by members of his family included sons Dave and Andrew both being former players of the Club, Dave having played over 100 1st Grade games with the Club.

George made comment that he remembered “things that other people wouldn’t like to know about, things you never forget” but the spritely 88 Year old knows one thing that he will be in attendance at every Tigers game – given good health – to witness the game and club he has followed for 5 decades.

Jake Hiep

Jake may have only briefly donned the Tigers jumper but his contribution as a NEAFL Player in 2014 warms him as one of our own and a player / person whose contribution to our armed services was recognised on ANZAC Day as a member of the ANZAC catafalque in Turkey at the centenary commemorations at Lone Pine.

Now a member of the Ainslie NEAFL team and unable to play in their historic win last Saturday over NEAFL team Brisbane Lions, Jake forwarded a message to the team “to play like brothers” which according to coach Chris Rourke inspired the Tricolours to their second win from 3 games this season.

Matt Cavedon

One of the most popular former players in the past ten years to have donned the black and gold, now a resident of Perth, Matt keeps a keen eye on our progress. Matt played/coached a win in the Australian Defence Force challenge on Anzac Day as the curtain raiser to the Port Adelaide v Hawthorn match.

Lani Watson

Popular Tigerette Lani Watson has many skills and in addition to playing AFL she plays AustTAG.

From her form shown in the ACT summer competition Lani was selected in the ANZAC Women’s AUSTAG20 team that played matches in Goulburn over the past weekend. Lani also gained selection in the ACT Ladies AFL Representative team that played AFL Sydney recently joining 6 other Tigerettes selected in team.

Gallipoli

A number of associates also gained selection in the the Nationwide ballot to attend the ANZAC Day ceremonies at Gallipoli. Former Tigers Reserve Grade Captain and Premiership player (1985) Col McKenna and son Dylan travelled to Turkey. Also in attendance through the ballot was former junior player Nicholis Lawlis and mother Tanya.
