Water, sun screen and ice –the items required most last Saturday at the Bruce Purser Oval. Temperatures hovered in the early thirties – ideal for the beach but not for playing a winter game.
The Tigers eventually won a strong hit out after having control of the game for most periods but with a determined Sydney Hills Eagles coming back repeatedly throughout the match.
At one stage the Tigers had a lead of 7 goals mid way through the third term only for the Eagles to bounce back posting three goals in five minutes to close the gap.
Inaccurate kicking marred a quality performance by the Tigers. Up forward Tigers spearhead James Kavanagh once again proved a headache for his opponents.
The experience of Coach Kade Klemke and Jarrod Atkinson was invaluable along with the excellent form shown by Kaine Stevens whose early season form is outstanding.
“ Big Ben” Klemke is also providing a strong target in the forward line. Injury free, this youngster will be a tower of strength for the Tigers as the season unfolds.
Another youngster Sam Jensen provided plenty of bounce around the packs even though gaining some unwarranted attention during the game.
“Old timer” Neil Irwin played one of his best games in recent years providing plenty of on field presence in sticky conditions.

AFL Canberra Division 1
The Tigers AFL Canberra Division 1 team just failed to take the points over a strong Belconnen Magpies team at Dairy Farmers Park on Sunday.
In a disappointing display, the Tigers were 6 goals in arrears at the final break and came home with a blistering 6 goal last term to fail by a mere 4 points.
A number of positional changes at three quarter time opened up the Tigers forward line with Tom Hollis and Michael Wescombe combining well to provide strong marking options up forward.
With only 30 seconds remaining the Tigers had clawed their way to be just 4 points down but time ran out in an entertaining last quarter.
Newcomer Dale Cummins was solid throughout the game and is a welcome addition at this level of football. Jeremy Kirkwood and Mitch Daniher were both prominent throughout the day as was Ben Walsh who battled tough conditions in the ruck all day against much taller opponents.

Under 18 – Rising Stars Competition
The Tigers Under 18 Grade combination gave a complete team effort in disposing of last years premiers on Sunday morning at Dairy Farmers Park. The Magpies jumped out early but by the end of the 1st quarter the Tigers were gaining momentum and took over after half time to post a comfortable and well deserved 67 point victory.
Newcomer Kyle Farrugia is finding his feet in the black and gold and his monster goal in the third term showed just what this character is made of. We can expect big things from this lad as the season unfolds.
Toby Yeates provides plenty of experience at this level of footy along with the steadiness of Captain Steve Camp in the backline. James Armstrong and Cody Haub are two players to watch in the future.
