Tigers Out of 1st Grade Finals Race
As Tigers Coach Mark Armstrong strode up the players race after being chaired from the field by his teammates (in what would be his last game as Coach) he must have looked back on a career peppered with team success and personal achievements.
The Tigers 15 point loss to Eastlake ended what promised to be a fairytale end to a stellar career as coach and player. He is arguably one of the best players to have donned the black and gold in its 85 year history.
There were few dry eyes in the change rooms after the match. After 323 games, there was hope of achieving premiership success for “Merv” in his final year, but it was not to be. The Demons were too strong on the day ending the Tigers season after such a promising last half of the year.
A slow first quarter resulted in three goals to the Demons to nil by the Tigers. This was basically the end result. Although coming close on many occasions they were unable to take the lead. The Demons opened a 7 goal lead half way through the last quarter only for the Tigers to crawl their way back into the match. When a goal was kicked off the ground in the final 8 minutes which would have bought the Tigers into contention, the central umpire overruled the goal umpire resulting in a point. Bewildering to say the least.
That, plus the second best mark of the day by Captain Ryan Quade not being awarded in front of goals in the third quarter left the Tigers perplexed at some of the decision making. The best mark of the day went to the Demons Dean Roulstone in front of the main grandstand. Back that up with his goal of the day deep in the grandstand pocket and he was the difference between the two sides. Both individual efforts brought strong applause from both camps.
The Tigers were best served by the “usual”. Conroy, Daniher, Quade and Kavanagh were all fantastic in their efforts. Add Neil Irwin’s tremendous running game from the backline and its leaves a few wondering how the game was lost.
Indiscretions resulted in three 50 metre penalties (all warranted) – goals being awarded each time.
It was certainly a disappointing result for the Club.

Reserve Grade
The Tigers Reserve Grade played in atrocious conditions at Manuka Oval on Saturday with constant rain falling throughout Friday evening into Saturday. The oval resembled a lake which resulted in low scores for all three 2nd semi final matches.
The Tigers scored a well deserved victory and have entered their fifth successive Grand Final. This has been no mean feat. Approx 50 players have played throughout the season with constant changes being forced on the team each game. The quality of players not playing last Saturday due to varying reasons speaks highly of the spirit within the club to maintain an active strong playing list through the ranks.

Reserve Grade has won way into it's 5th Grand Final in a row.
The will be a few changes to the team for the Grand Final. A number of players are now ineligible the 1st Grade have departed their finals campaign. The match last Saturday was a slog in the wet. However there were some features of the game. Non more so than the torpedo goal of Greg Hair from outside 50 to bring up the Tigers 1st major of the game. His experience throughout the match certainly brought many of the youngsters into play. They included Sam Daniel, Michael Moss, Hayden Kelly and Tom Hollis. The other goal of the match came in the dying minutes of the last quarter to seal victory when Sam Daniel kicked truly from deep in the pocket against the wind. It was reminiscent of his fathers goal in the 1989 1st Grade Grand Final – just not as far out – just ask his Dad !!!
It was a day for the little blokes and Dave Corcoran absolutely shone on an overcast day. His ability to get in and under was tremendous and he deservedly was voted amongst the best. The “old bloke” Dennis Quade seems to be getting better as he racks up yet another grand final appearance – his eighth – which includes a 1st Grade Premiership in 2000. The Tigers will now prepare for September 12 with training sessions this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday morning and then again next week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Under 18 Grade
The Tigers started the day with a loss to the Under 18 Grade. They certainly looked the goods in the rooms before the match with the spirit, enthusiasm and preparation well in place. Although there was little between the two teams, the Magpies gained the advantage in the third term to open a 15 point lead at the ¾ time break. In the conditions the Tigers were always going to find it tough to rein their lead in.
It was certainly disappointing for this team who played some excellent football early in the year. Many of these lads will now move into the senior ranks and provide new Coach Rod O’Riley with some talented players to work with over the summer.
The Tigers Club would like to express its great appreciation to Coach Paul Campbell and his assistants Scotty Taylor and Peter Jensen for the fantastic effort they have contributed to the club and in particular this team during the year. They have development many players for senior grade level with the likes of Andrew Swan, Sam Jensen, Ryan Price Jake Oram, Taylor Lee, Shannon Winmar, Cameron Cobby and albeit in a small way Kaine Stevens (who served most of his time this year with the GWS team) all gaining experience with the Tigers 1st Grade team or with the Sydney Swans Reserve Grade team at some stage during the year.
