Another first for the Tigers Club

Writer's picture: QBN Tigers ClubQBN Tigers Club

The Tigers Club went into last weekend’s matches apprehensive as to the outcome of most games.

Quite a few players were missing through the grades for varying reasons hence the lower grades would feel the pressure of players being elevated / promoted into higher grades.

By the end of Saturday, the Tigers had won all 5 grades of footy and were set for night of celebration for Toby Conroys “50th” birthday!

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

The Tigers gamble of entering a Women’s team in the AFL Canberra 2nd Grade

competition this year has provided a fantastic opportunity to include more players, supporters and volunteers into the organisation. The success of this team thus far has been enormous and a credit to those directly involved from week to week.

Last Saturday playing at Rockley Oval in Googong they set the tone of the day with a convincing win over Ainslie not allowing the opposition to score while posting an impressive 6.12 (48).

Under 18 Grade Rising Stars

At Allinsure Park, the youthful Tigers Under 18 Grade team were up against Marist.

The promotion to 1st grade of Bailey Greenwood and Lachlan Squire and the loss of the dynamic Harry Grant in the opening quarter plus the absence of a couple of other regulars would severely test the depth of this team. However, they came through the test with flying colours and won quite convincingly with a strong last quarter.

Even more impressive is the fact that team members (led by Captain Aidan Bowyer) coached the team throughout the week and on game day.

Full credit to coach Chris Clifton and his band of co-coaches for allowing them this opportunity.

Tigers Men’s Reserve Grade

The Tigers went into this encounter having lost their two previous matches this year to competition leaders Eastlake. There has been renewed enthusiasm in the last month amongst this group and that was certainly on display last Saturday evening under lights at Allinsure Park.

They were strong around the ground for the entire encounter and won in convincing manner.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

A loss to second place Eastlake would see the Tigerettes drop out of contention for a possible top two position by seasons end.  Both teams were depleted due to representative duties for players in Sydney with the Tigerettes missing 5 quality players for this match.

A determined first quarter effort would see the Tigerettes lay the foundations for a quality win which now has them just one game shy from second position with a far superior percentage at this time of the year.

Tigers First Grade

The after-match celebrations in the change rooms clearly showed the importance of the Tigers win over Eastlake last Saturday afternoon.

And in the middle of those celebrations was yet another player in his debut 1st grade game being 17-year-old Lachlan Squire.  The occasion not lost for the youngster with his jumper presentation being made by long time junior club mentors Scott Taylor and Lyn McKenzie. Scotty noting the importance of junior development and in the case of Lachie, him being a Tigers junior since age 4!!!!

Eastlake walloped the Tigers mid-season by 40 points at Manuka Oval. A turnaround of 90 points on this occasion is massive in terms of making a statement to the Tigers playing group of just what they can produce.
