On Sunday the 14th July the Queanbeyan Tigers AFL Club will be commemorating their NEAFL clash against the Belconnen Magpies to past and present Military Veterans – this game being part of the Tigers Community Partners program.

The Club has a community partnership with the Heart Foundation, PINK Day in support of Breast Cancer, City of Queanbeyan 175th Anniversary and activities associated with the Bendigo Community Bank.  The Club also supports Awareness of World Poverty through Matt and Wendy Napier and various other local charities / institutions.

The idea of supporting the Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Federation has developed by way of the Tigers strong connection to the Military with current players and coaching staff serving with Australian Military Forces in both peace and war time situations.  Conditioning Coach Robbie Thompson has been the driving force behind this community partnership – he being ex military.

Indeed many players from the Military have been part of the Tigers during its long history especially during the 60’s and 70’s when the Harman Navel Base was active.

In honouring our Veterans and current serving Military members, the Tigers will be wearing a commemorative camouflage style playing strip. Some of the playing jumpers will be auctioned at the end of the game and all monies raised will be donated to the Vietnam Veterans & Veterans Federation ACT Branch (VVF-ACT).

A ‘Tigers NEAFL player of the Match’ Award will be presented to a Queanbeyan player at the after match function – the award being the very inspirational medallion set from the In the Service of Others collection – valued at $450.  The Club is hopeful that a VC recipient will be on hand to make the presentation.

The In the Service of Others collection is a major fundraising initiative for Soldier On. The medallion set can be viewed on the following website.

The Tigers are hoping that the Vietnam Veterans Day will become an annual match against various NEAFL opponents and that the Man of the Match Award will be keenly sought after by all of the players representing the Tigers NEAFL team on the day.

The Club extends an invitation to all servicemen (past and present) to attend the game and witness what should be another classic encounter between two rival NEAFL Clubs.   Full details of the day:

  1. 9.30am:   Under 18 Grade Tigers Rising Stars v Belconnen

  2. 11.30am:  AFL Canberra Division 1 Tigers v Belconnen

  3. 2.00pm:   NEAFL   Tigers v Belconnen Magpies  (Coin Toss by Vietnam Veteran)
