In the recent historic draft for the inaugural Women’s AFL Season, Queanbeyan’s own Ella Ross has been drafted by GWS Giants.

Ella, who has represented Australia in Softball at the junior level, started playing Australian Rules with Queanbeyan Tigerettes 3 years ago, gaining ACT selection in her first season. A high quality player Ella has been a regular ACT representative over the past 3 seasons and together with Queanbeyan Captain Hannah Dunn represented ACT/NSW against South Australia at Adelaide Oval in a precursor to the Women’s League earlier this year. Both players showed they are more than capable of playing at the highest level.

After picking up another Jill Bright Medal as best and fairest for the women’s team, the now two-time best and fairest (2106 and 2014) Ella had another excellent season. Her form over the past 3 seasons has obviously caught the eye of firstly ACT selectors and ultimately the GWS officials.

Ella’s attack on the ball, competitive nature and excellent skills combined with speed and endurance make her a logical choice for the new Women’s League.

The drafting of Ella from the local competition is a huge boost for local football showing young players that the opportunities are available on our own doorstep.

Whilst it will be a huge journey we are confident that Ella will meet all the challenges thrown at her. Whatever happens women’s draft days was a proud one for Ella, her friends and family, and the Queanbeyan Tigers Football Club. It is good recognition for all Tigerette’s past and present.

Ella has begun getting a share of media coverage. Listen to her speak about how she found out she was drafted and what is ahead at click here…
