resh back in the country from an overseas work and study placement, Matthew Grocott was back at training last week less than 24 hours after touching down.
The Tigers were always hopeful “Growey” would be a part of the First Grade squad in the latter part of 2017, but until he turned up for training and actually played a game there was little more we could do than hope.
That hope turned to excitement amongst the playing group, coaches, officials and volunteers as Matt pushed himself through a punishing first training session and confirmed his availability and commitment to the Tigers for the remainder of 2017.
Having Matt on board for the remainder of 2017 is a huge boost for our finals campaign. And if that wasn’t enough of a boost for the Tigers, Matt’s commitment to the black and gold beyond 2017 is sure to excite players and supporters alike.
The Tigers are very pleased to announce that Matt has signed a two-year contract extension on top of committing for 2017 and will be a key player for the Tigers for years to come.
At just 21 years of age Matt is already only a handful of games short of his 50 First Grade game milestone. His playing resume is impressve and includes being joint 2014 Alan Muir Medalist for Best and Fairest in the under 18 grade – an award he shared with Brandon Lagana in a year they won the Rising Stars premiership; 2015 Armstrong/Niesen Medalist as First Grade Leading Goalkicker; 2015 First Grade Premiership player; 2016 Dane Quade Medalist for the best player under the age of 21 playing First Grade; and 2016 AFL Canberra Team of the Year member.
Recently reappointed First Grade coach Dave Corcoran was thrilled that Matt has committed to the Tigers long term on a three year deal.
“Matt is the sort of player we can build a team around long term and it’s equally as exciting for AFL Canberra that we can keep a player of Matt’s calibre in the local league for the foreseeable future.
“Matt’s footy has improved consistently over the last couple of years and I can’t wait to see his footy career continue to develop in a Tigers jumper.
“Matt is one of the hard workers on our list and it is this work ethic that will see him be a leader of our proud Club for years to come,” Corcoran said.
Welcome on board Growey!
