James Kavanagh kicks 7 for the second time in 2011.

North East Australian Football League The Tigers produced one of those on / off days of footy before finally taking the lead midway through the last quarter of their NEAFL match against the Belconnen Magpies on Sunday at Dairy Farmers Park. The final score being in the home teams favour 16. 13 (109) to 14.7 (91).

The Magpies provided stiff opposition throughout the match and had a commanding three goal lead at the ten minute mark of the last quarter before the Tigers finally hit some form posting six last quarter goals to win the match by 18 points.

After thumping the Belconnen team in the opening round of the season, most followers would have expected a strong win to the Tigers but the Northerners gave strong opposition and an upset was on the cards well into the game. A blast from Coach Rod O’Riley at half time provided some importance to the Tigers pride and passion for the Club. The tempo picked up accordingly as the final two quarters evolved.

There were few players who performed for four quarters. Captain Ryan Quade certainly lifted his charges throughout the match. Up forward James Kavanagh again provided plenty of headaches for his opposition posting 7 excellent goals. Mitch Heaslip continues to ruck against enormous odds but his performance is worthy of praise as was youngster Kaine Stevens who gave his all for the entire game.

Congratulations to Daniel Campbell who played his first game of NEAFL sealing the Tigers victory with a goal in the final couple of minutes of play.

Indications are – there will be changes to the team when it travels up the Hume Highway on 21 May to take on the GWS Giants at Blacktown. A number of key players are either carrying injuries or are just out of form and may be either rested or relegated to the Reserves.

The Tigers take a break this weekend with the bye but will have to improve 100% if they are to have any chance against GWS – the next fully fledged AFL team. AFL Canberra Reserves. The Reserve Grade match was similar to the NEAFL match with Belconnen having a commanding lead well into the final quarter before the Tigers turned their game around posting 30 plus points to eventually win by 18 points.

The Tigers lost the opening game of the season against the Magpies but fielded a stronger combination this time round even though quite a number of players were missing from the senior listing of players. There were some positive performances from players pushing for a senior grade spot against the Magpies last Sunday.

The Jabornik brothers were honest contributors throughout the match with the elder (Daniel) displaying some of the form that won him the J McNamara Reserve Grade League Best and Fairest in 2009. Off the half back line Ryan Price and Liam Walker Eastick provided the team with plenty of pace and run often pushing the Tigers into attack.

Cousins Jared and Sam Daniel are certainly striking some form along with “veterans” Chris Haddock and Greg Hair. Brett Fruend posted some wonderful goals in the final term to change the fortunes of the game. He obviously relished his time in the seniors and now is enjoying the duel role of being an on ball / forward line player. Casey Walsh was another who contributed to the Tigers win.

Under 18 Grade

For the third game in a row, the Tigers took the field undermanned with a number of players out injured or unavailable. Playing against the competition favourites (Belconnen) who remain undefeated they never gave an inch eventually going down to a more accomplished opposition by 34 points.

There were some really good performances. Toby Yeates played an extremely competitive game with plenty of effort and commitment as the game wore on. Sean Van Holland displayed his experience at this level and if he can overcome consistent niggling injuries will be a player to watch in the future. Young Pricey (Mitch) produced some of the form of last year gaining plenty of possessions. His pace will be a great asset in years to come as he progresses through the ranks.

Michael Elliott is a quite achiever and goes about his work in the backline without any fuss. He truly is a pleasure to watch and to coach. He does everything he is asked to provide plus those little extra moments of brilliance that go unnoticed. Add two younger players to the above names in PJ Maher and Jason Taylor and the club has some serious talent in its stocks for future years. The Club is quietly confident that once a few players return to this team it will turn its fortunes around very quickly.
