Under 8’s

After a three week break round 10 saw the Palmers TV U8’s Tigers took on the Calwell Swans at Mackillop College.

The lovely sunny weather helped the kids warm up quickly and you could hardly tell they had come off a long break.

Lots of terrific goals were scored.  Strong marks at centre half forward following good defence and fast mid field running showed that the tigers have progressed well throughout the season.

The Tigers also were keen to support the Calwell Swans who were short on players.

The Tiger Us are able to mix good attacking footy skills and sportsmanship every week.

The next game is at home at Dairy Farmers Park with team photos beforehand.

U9 Tigers were matched against the Calwell Swans and the Bulldogs at MacKillop College oval on 27 July 2013.

Both teams took time to get back into the swing of footy after the school holiday break.  Soon plenty of goals were being scored as both Tigers’ teams took control of possession.

Coaches Mark and Phil encouraged players to run and spread in different directions.  This gave defenders plenty of targets to help move the ball forward.  Tigers’ players took some great marks and are continuing to share the ball around all teammates.  Another couple of great junior footy matches!

Next weeks’ game is at Dairy Farmer’s Park.

Under 10’s Black

The Biajag Constructions Tigers U10 black played host to the wildcats on what was a perfect day for players and spectators.

As the wildcats had only nine players, three of our team members playing with them, so to have everyone on the park, a big thank you to those who put their hand up, and well played.

After a two week break, the boys got off to a slow start, but as the game progressed everyone started to work well as a team.

Yet again our backline played nice and tight, moving the ball with long kicking , with the midfield delivering to the forwards .

Well done to all.

The Canberra Truck Align

sponsored Tigers Black U11’s had a really good tough match against the Ainslie Red side last Saturday in magnificent conditions at Steve Maugher Oval.

It was always going to be a close contest with the Tigers well down on man power (5 players unavailable) meaning a few younger lads took the opportunity to come up and fill in.   Coupled with the short fall in numbers was the fact the Ainslie side was sitting 5th on the ladder just a spot behind the mighty tigers side and were determined to try and take a top four scalp.

The match began with the all players trying desperately to get their hands on the footy and obtain first use.  The Tigers were rusty after their break and with the score locked at 5-8-38 to 3-1-19 at half time a few words of wisdom from Supercoach Dwyer were needed to lift the lads into another gear.  The final score of 11-12-78 to 3-1-19 was a great result and a rich reward for an excellent 2nd half of team oriented football.

All players tried their hearts out and it was a really good game to watch from the sidelines.

Match Report for the Baker Deanne & Nutt U11 Gold Tigers

Round 10 saw the Tigers Baker Deane and Nutt sponsored U11 Gold team battle the Belconnen Cats at Halloran Oval.

On a beautiful winter’s day after the school holiday break, the young Tigers were hoping to bounce back to the winners list. Unfortunately this was not to be the case, as the absence of a couple of the Tiger’s key players and a very well drilled Belconnen team attacked from the start and led 3.4.22 to 0.0.0 at quarter time. The Tigers lack of discipline in not picking up their players in the backline was a major factor in the Cats running rampant.

The Tigers second quarter was a much improved effort as they started attacking the ball and held it in their attacking zone for long periods of time, but unfortunately could not capitalize on their opportunities. The half time score was 4.7.31 to 0.1.1.

The Tigers continued to hold their own in the third quarter and showed some improvement in the movement of the ball down the field. In particular, their kicking out from fullback to a set plan was starting to work and some better delivery into the forward line created some more scoring opportunities. The score at three quarter time was 6.8.44 to 0.1.1

Unfortunately the Tigers lost their way again in the last quarter and became more focused on playing the man rather than the ball and not working together as a team. If they can learn to improve these two aspects of their game, they will find the games become much easier and more enjoyable. The final score was 9.9.63 to 0.2.2.

Thanks to Belconnen for lending us three players to even up numbers on the day and best wishes to Rory Gibbs hoping he recovers quickly from what looked like a nasty wrist injury late in the game.

The Mr Brand Man U12’ Tigers were triumphant against the Belconnen Cats at Steve Maugher Oval last weekend with the match thrillingly decided towards the end of the last quarter.

First half of the game was an all in affair with both sides evenly matched in the air and on the ground with both teams displaying impressive ball handling skills and crumbing techniques in beautiful sunny conditions.

The Tigers lost their stride during the 3rd quarter and Belconnen seemed to have the players at the contest and created a wall locking the ball into the Cats forward line. Only pressure applied by the Tigers backline prevented the Cats from scoring on numerous occasions. Well done to our players.

After a quick and motivating pep talk from the coach, the Tigers regained their composure and with some hard fought contests managed to squeeze through two goals in the last five minutes nudging the Tigers in front before the final siren, giving the Tigers a much needed win and a boost going into next week’s game against the Ainslie Reds. Keep up the momentum Tigers; we want to hear the Tigers song again next week.

Congratulations to Jack Heslop for his 50th game and special thanks to Liam Murphy and Angus Knox for making up numbers for the Cats in the second half.

Bakers Delight Jerrabomberra

U13’s Tigers, sitting on Top Spot on the ladder had a nail-biting win on Saturday at Giralang, defeating 8th place Belconnen Magpies.

The boys, as always, were enthusiastic from the word go. 1st quarter was exciting with some great footy being played by both teams, however no goals scored by either.

A brilliant goal from Jordan Gay seconds into the 2nd quarter gets the boys pumped with 6 points on the board. Tom McNamara kicks a lovely 6-pointer for Tigers, followed by two goals to the Magpies sees a very even quarter with half-time score 2-3-15 to 2-3-15!!!

In the third quarter the Magpies were in good form kicking 3 goals to Tigers 1. Welcome back to the team (and the cold!!) after a trip to Cape York – Jasper Barnett, kicking a goal for Tigers in this quarter, and finding his usual good form. By the end of the 3rd quarter Tigers were down by 3 goals. Ben Millynn and Adam Houghton showed sensational support play.

The 4th quarter is a nailbiter. The Tigers were pumped to get back in front. Liam Shakespeare kicked a magnificent goal right on target. Muscles (Jamie) Edwards received a penalty from in front of the goals and increased our score another 6 points. Two fantastic goals to Jasper Barnett combined with great team work by all had the Tigers claiming a 5-point win!!

With no official umpire for the game, huge thanks is extended to Heath Ross for being an umpire, Rick Pankasz helping out with Boundary umpire duty, and Deb and Mark Houghton for being goal umpires. You guys are always happy to help out week in week out and it’s much appreciated.

Final score being Tigers: 7-7-49 to Belconnen Magpies 6-8-44.

An exciting home game is on the cards for Saturday against 2nd placed Eastlake at Queanbeyan Town Park at 9.30am. Well done boys we can do it again!!

Under 14’s

Last Saturday the Jill and Nicole Bright U14 Tigers travelled to play Magpies Black at Giralang.

The young Tigers started the game full of enthusiasm and were on top from the start kicking the first goal of the game through Christian Palombi. The forward line of Matthew McKenzie, Joe Page and Corey McAlpin were on top and causing difficulty for their opponents.

Lachlan Squire, Aidan Bowyer and Connor Hogan were again winning plenty of ball through the middle while the backline lead by Zane Fajri and Tyler Van Luin were stopping everything that came their way.

This all changed however in the second quarter with injuries playing their part. This resulted in many positional changes and the chance for the Magpies to get back in the game. The boys continued to battle hard but were unable to hang on for the win.

The Tigers will play their next match against Eastlake at Town Park. Training continues at Town Park on Tuesday from 4.30pm.

On Saturday the Bendigo Bank Jerrabomberra U15 Tigers hosted Goulburn at Town Park..

The Tigers started well kicking ten unanswered goals in the first quarter. Zak Cowley-Hilton and Darius Marsh were prominent up forward finishing the good work done up the ground.

The midfield won the ball well out of the centre and run in good numbers. Matt Verdanaga’s control of the centre was terrific whilst Nathan Organ and Jackson Street kicked well to position.

All players were first to the ball with the tackling pressure of the boys also outstanding. Liam Nelson and George Cross led from the front across half-back with penetrating kicking and hard running. The rest of the backline was also dominant with Finley Hollyhead winning many contests.

All players contributed to the win with both Angus Hoadley and Angus McLaughlin becoming very adaptable players in defence and attack.

At the finish the Tigers recorded a solid win.

Next Saturday the Tigers host St Edmunds at Town Park. Training continues at Town Park on Tuesday from 4.30pm.

The OFFICEWORKS U17 Tigers were at home for Round 10 on Saturday to match up against the Weston Creek Wildcats needing to continue getting the points on the board in the hope to make finals footy.

The game started well; however a lack of making our kicks count saw us going into first quarter with 3.6.24 to 0.2.2.

The second quarter saw the ball get spread a lot further around and some great solid mid field play by Jed Simpson, Shaun Franks, Arthur McPhee and Alex Page lead us into half time up by 8 goals.

Half time was a discussion with a team about talk on the field.  There is never enough communication on the field and today was no different.  Coach Kenny asked the boys to commit to the 2nd forty and get the points on the board.

The third quarter saw Darius Marsh kick his fourth for the game and Lachie Jordan showing how well he is taking control of the ruck and moving around the field landing his 2nd for the game.  Whilst third quarter did quieten and the Tigers allowed the Wildcats to get a little more control of the ball in spots, the boys were leading going into the final by 62 points.

The final twenty saw the boys continue to put the points on the board, but at times not hitting their target and creating more work for themselves.  However the overall team effort saw the Tigers take the win 18.11.119 to 2.6.18

Once again a massive thank you to Harry, Josh, Jed, Isaac and Matt for travelling up from the coast to play in the Black and Yellow.  Also the then 15’s boys that backed up – Dylan, Darius and Wilson, and to Brad Murphy for coming from 18s to help us out for the day. Cheers.
