The Tigers Under 18 Grade Rising Stars team staged a magnificent comeback in the last quarter to post a five point win over Belconnen Magpies at Kippax Oval in the Preliminary Final last Saturday.

They will now meet Ainslie in the Grand Final next Sunday – at Kippax Oval at 9.15am in what should be a fantastic finale to the 2013 season.

All looked doomed at ½ time with the home team having a four goal advantage.  A further 6 pointer in the opening of the third term and one would of thought “game over”.  But that was the last score the Magpies would attain.

Jason Taylor 2-600

Although kicking with the advantage of a strong wind in the third quarter, Belconnen could not break down a strong defensive effort from the Tigers (who also managed just one goal for the quarter) but they had set the tone for an intriguing last term.   In blustery conditions the Tigers had 9 scoring shots in the last term to nil by the Magpies.

It went down to the final minute of the last quarter before the Tigers finally put their nose in front for the first time in the game.

Sam Adams posted a long range goal with 45 seconds remaining. There were jubilant scenes amongst all players (and some coaches) but to the dismay of all concerned the ball was quickly ushered back to the centre square for a throw up and a clearance into the Magpies forward line for a mark on the fifty to the home team.

The siren sounded and the young Magpies player tried his utmost to put the ball through the sticks but it fell short for the Tigers to record a victory to be remembered.

There would be a couple of lessons to be learnt:

  1. For the Tigers – the game is never over until the final siren – celebrations should be left until its sounds!

  2. For the Magpies – never give your opponents any motivation.   Some of the comments directed at the Tigers at half time certainly fired them into action.

There were some outstanding performances for the Tigers but to name individuals would do an injustice to those who would not be given a mention.

On the day it was a team performance by the entire group – even by those who may have gained limited on field game time.

Sam Bowden 1-600

Brandon Lagana 1-600

But a grand final now awaits all.  Enjoy the moment.

They are not a regular occurrence.
