From everyone at Tiger Land we send our congratulations to both Tigers Greats! Read below each players wonderful achievements:

Jason Gilbert #7

All Australian Country Representation

200 1st Grade Games

This block-busting player participated in many matches with the Tigers Junior Organisation before progressing to Senior Grade ranks. Originating from the small township of Ardlethan in the Riverina and moving to Queanbeyan with his parents at a young age, Jason was always destined to play a high standard of Australian Football. After making his debut for the Tigers in 1990 he played 95 First Grade matches before being recruited to the West Adelaide Football Club in 1996.

Before his departure he had played in many Grand Final and Premiership teams including the following – the 1989 – Reserve Grade and 1991 First Grade Premierships, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1995 – 1st Grade Grand Finals – all lost to the Ainslie Football Club.

On his return Jason became an integral part of the record equaling triple Premiership teams of 1998, 1999 and the year 2000. To his credit he played an enormous part in developing on and off field mate ship during these Premiership years which were enormously taxing on all participants. He has since played in another Grand Final being the year 2002, which totals nine 1st Grade Grand Final appearances.

During his long senior grade career with the Club he also represented Canberra on 10 occasions, finished runner up in the 1995 Mulrooney Medal and won the Tigers 1st Grade Best & Fairest in the following Years 1995, 2000 and 2002.

Tony Wynd #2

Tigers 1st Grade Games Record Holder 347

4 Time Mulrooney Medalist / All Australian

Queanbeyan and the ACT’s first All Australian Representative was Tony Wynd. Tony was selected in the Australian “Galahs” team to tour Ireland and the USA in late 1987. He is one of the very few players to be selected for this team outside the major Australian Football League including AFL, VFL, SANFL & WANFL

Although only 23 at the time of his selection he was well qualified, being one of the most outstanding footballers during the eighties. Tony Wynd represented the ACT at all levels of football both Junior and Senior. He achieved the following football personal highlights during his career:

  1. Selection in the All Australian Under 17 Teal Cup team.

  2. Won the Tigers 1st Grade Best & Fairest a record 5 occasions: 1982, 1988, 1991, 1993 & 1997 and in doing so had the award named after him to record this magnificent achievement. The 1st Grade Best & Fairest award became known as the Tony Wynd Medal in 1997 – ‘he won his own medal that year’.

  3. Won the Mulrooney Medal as the League’s Best & Fairest a record four occasions: 1983, 1988,1989 and 1990.

  4. Played a record 347 1st grade games with the Tigers Football Club

  5. In addition, he played a record 41 representative games for the ACTAFL

  7. Captain of the Tigers for a record 8 years – 1988 to 1995

  16. Inducted Tigers Walk of Honour

Freezing weather conditions were experienced across the grades last weekend. All grades played at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval over the Friday /

Saturday with all teams managing wins over their respective opposition.

Friday Night

Men’s 1st Grade

The experiment of playing Friday night football mid-July in Canberra took a complete nosedive when the Tigers Men’s 1st Grade played Gungahlin Jets at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval last weekend.

If the conditions weren’t bad enough for the players, thoughts immediately refer to the few spectators who ventured out and sat in the grandstand. This in addition to the officiating umpires and volunteers standing around the boundary assisting those combatants on the field.

Night football at this time of the year is complete nonsense for any grade and one wonders why the powers to be would even consider such thoughts. This time of the year is the coldest and most undesirable time to play football at any time let alone at night in minus temperature conditions.

The Tigers went into the match with the knowledge of the Jets improvement this year and without recognised team movers Toby Conroy, Josh Bryce and Lachie Highfield.

In a tight opening quarter, a few late goals enabled the Tigers to take a 14-point lead at quarter time before establishing a strong lead by the main break. The conditions made it tough for everyone but as the game progressed so did the endeavours of the playing group enabling a strong 45-point victory by the final siren.

Once again Dean Simpson was outstanding in the backline.

Playing his 50th 1st Grade game for the Tigers he repeatedly sent the ball forward in a best on ground performance. Stand out performances were also

contributed to Christian Palombi, Jack Carroll Tape and stand in skipper Tyler Collins. Up forward the likes of Clowry, Grocott and Fruend were targets to aim for while Alex Page was damaging around the ground.

Saturday

The Men’s Reserve Grade and Tigerettes 1st and Reserve Grades traveled to Gungahlin on the Saturday for the remainder of the

club games – all coming away with strong results. As per the previous night the weather conditions were shocking and leaves no doubt that Gungahlin Enclosed Oval has taken the title of Artic Park away from Greenway Oval.

Men’s Reserve Grade

The Tigers played an undermanned Gungahlin Jets combination which never stopped trying throughout but were no match for the Tigers combination – itself undermanned. Thanks to Rising Stars players Alex Samond and Hayden Hunter who filled in at the last minute to assist make up the numbers with a few late withdrawals.

Jayden Cutts who has returned to the team in recent weeks (after suffering a knee injury in the first round) was outstanding posting 10 goals and clearly is a player to watch moving into the last few games before finals.

Hugh McKenzie loved the inclement weather conditions and showed his undoubted talent with some precision delivery of the ball. His pace and ball gathering ability a feature. 2015 1st Grade premiership players Scott Lancaster, Mitch Price and Jason Taylor all stood tall (if that’s possible) in a strong victory.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

The Gungahlin Jets have struggled all season but to their credit have fielded a 1st Grade Women’s team throughout. Losing many players to opposition clubs during the off season has resulted in the Jets – who were Grand Finalists in 2016 – not being able to score for the entire season – until last Saturday!!!

They scored a point just prior to half time and the celebrations were admired by all in attendance. That inspired them to come out fighting after the break posting their first goal of the season. Even Kate Woodward assisted the Jets kicking a point for them.

The Tigers were best served by the “older” brigade, but it was pleasing to see the likes of Ashlee Jakim, Kaitlin Dobing, Cameron Moncrieff, Ellen Squire and Mikaela Callender all contributing to a solid all-round performance.

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

The last game on the calendar on Saturday was that between the Tigerettes Reserves and Eastlake. Unfortunately, the game didn’t start until 45

minutes after the Tigerettes 1st Grade game had completed keeping players, volunteers and supporters out in the cold for an extended period.

The sportsmanship shown by the Tigerettes to play well short of the numbers allowed on the field (due to Eastlake only having 14 players) is to be commended especially as the bench is difficult to manage with extra players not participating.

It took some time for the Tigerettes to adapt to the extreme conditions but once they did, they outclassed their opposition by the final siren winning by 54 points. (The Eastlake Ladies improving the score line from their previous encounter by over 50 points. Well done).

The Club welcomed back the Reid sisters Kate and Cassie after lengthy layoffs from the game and they played like they had never had a break. Georgy Stephinson was outstanding throughout. Shaylee Dal Santo posted three goals in a strong display up forward. Stacey Close who has returned to the field after knee surgery was a welcome addition to the playing arena. Kristen Turner and Kelsey Pye were also strong contributors among many.

Many thanks to Tim Stephinson (Central Umpire) and to Ray Downey (Goal Umpire) for providing your services in such unsavory weather.

Huge Thank you

To everyone who ventured out to Gungahlin Oval, a huge thank you from the players.

In particular – our volunteers and coaches who attended both Friday night and all-day Saturday.

Your dedication is outstanding and greatly appreciated.

Special thanks to Joan Vosnakes for the Friday night after match refreshments.

Mixed results over the weekend but in simple terms Ainslie were far too strong across the men’s grades winning comfortably in all three encounters.

It was once again the Tigerettes in both 1st and Reserve Grades that dominated their own encounters with the 1st Grade Tigerettes flying the flag at against Ainslie in the late game grabbing a win even though missing a multiple of players through representative duty, injury or unavailability.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

The Tigerettes were missing nine quality players when lining up against Ainslie last Saturday at Alan Ray Oval, but the quality of depth and women’s program within the organisation speaks wonders for those in charge as they were able to cover those losses and maintain their unbeaten season thus far.

It was the older experienced brigade that led a very young Tigerettes side to victory with the likes of Hannah Dunn, Carl Res, Ella Ross, Ruby Grounds and Lani Watson all excelling among the likes of Kate Woodward, Ashlee Jakim and Hayley Rauter.

Full credit to Ainslie who kicked two goals in the final term never giving in to the Tigerettes.

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

The Tigerettes Reserve Grade played under lights at Allinsure Park last Friday evening accounting for the Tuggeranong Hawks. As per the 1st Grade team, they were missing many players who had been promoted to replace those absence from the Tigerettes 1st Grade team. Everyone acquitted themselves well.

Inaccuracy in front of goals was certainly an issue however they won comfortably in front of a strong Tigers gathering of supporters (mainly our younger male players !!!!) but also a large gathering of our wonderful volunteer group who continue to support all teams over any given weekend.

Melissa Hurly has a new lease on footy life and continues to provide strong guidance to her younger team mates as does Kristen turner. Sophia Arcus once again played a solid and determine game as did Jenna Williams and Chelsey Hamilton.

Under 18 Grade Rising Stars

The Tigers Rising Stars were well in the match right up to three quarter time but unfortunately the tide turned in the last quarter with Ainslie completely dominating the last term adding 5 goals.

Once again, the Tigers were depleted due to representative commitments which have been ongoing since the start of the season and now just when most will be returning to the fold, the Tigers have consecutive byes before they return to the playing arena in two weeks’ time.

The Tigers Coaching staff must be commended for their patience in developing this team and will reap the benefits late in the season as many of the youngsters gain maturity within the group. Jordan Gilbert continues to be hugely impressive as a 15-year-old in this age group.

Ben Thurling made an impressive return after suffering an injury at development training with the Giants.   Sam Robinson in only his second game after long term injury also played a quality game as did Mitch Taylor and Lachy Brennan.

There is much to be excited about as this team looks towards 2020.

Tigers Men’s Reserve Grade

The Tigers Reserve Grade suffered their third straight loss when encountering Ainslie last Saturday. Although missing a few regulars the Tigers fielded a relatively strong combination but could not match the Tri colours as the game unfolded.

There was little between the two teams however Ainslie posted a couple of quick goals early in the third term which basically set the standard for the remainder of the match. Youngsters Harry Straker and Will Taylor, two of the Tigers fantastic crop of former juniors coming through the ranks were consistent throughout.  The likes of Alec McCormick, Alex Godfrey and Scott Lancaster – all returning from overseas in recent weeks will be better for the run.

But after a very strong start to the season, the Tigers will have to regroup if they are to be there at the business end of the season. Injuries have certainly player a part in the teams demise in recent weeks however Coach Lawder will be approaching this group with the knowledge of the teams potential that has taken them to the last two grand finals.

Men’s 1st Grade

The disappointment of the day was the outcome of the Tigers Men’s 1st Grade team.

Wearing replica jumpers worn by the 1939 1st Grade Premiership team (for the supposed AFL Canberra Heritage Round), they were far from being the Tigers of old.

There was nothing between the two teams at half time with the home team having a nine-point advantage, but from there it was one-way traffic with the Tigers succumbing in the last quarter allowing their opponents to post 4 unanswered goals in a dominate display.

The Tigers lack of big quality players was never more evident. Jeremy Bridger battled hard all day as he has done so all year but around the ground, Ainslie had far too many taller personal including Best on Ground and winner of the Muir Medal Fraser Hawkins.

He was acknowledged as the Muir Medalist winning the prestigious award from the Tigers Toby Conroy. Ian Muir presented the Medal after introduction from Tiger legend Mark Armstrong.

In a sour day for the Tigers, they were best served by newcomer Ryan Worn and Tim Shea, both of whom have spent most of the season in the Reserves. Worn joined the Club earlier this year from Tasmania. Acting Captain Tyler Collins and Alex Page were certainly contributors throughout the match. The Tigers missed Captain Josh Bryce out through injury and then Lachie Highfield who suffered an ankle injury early in the match. But apart from those two there was no excuse for such an awful effort.
