Close on 200 people attended the Tigers 38th Annual 100 Club gathering at the Tigers Licensed Club last Saturday evening.

Celebrating the 1st Grade Premiership Reunions of 1939, 1989 and 1999 plus the Reserve Grade Premierships of 1989 and 2009, the Club was in full swing to celebrate the Tigerettes Reserve Grade team entering their Grand Final after defeating Riverina Lions during the day and that of the Minor Premiership gained by the Tigerettes 1st Grade team.

The evening commenced under the astute guidance of Wall of Fame Member and 1989 Reserve Grade Premiership player Paul Walshe as Master of Ceremonies. Three Associate Members were inducted being Treasurer Greg George, Physiotherapist Danny Rutten and QBN FM 96.7 Presenter Peter Newham.

Long time Licensed Club Board Member and former General Manager of the Queanbeyan City Council Hugh Percy was presented with Life Membership of the Tigers Licensed Club.

Members of the respective premiership teams in attendance were introduced to those attending the 100 Club Function. It was pleasing to note that 16 members of both the 1989 and 1999 1st Grade Premiership teams were in attendance along with many Officials and Coaches of the day including Brian Quade and James Dore.

The highlight of the evening is always the induction of new 100 game members and on this occasion former Captain Andrew Swan and current senior grade player Paul Slater were both inducted and acknowledged as playing their respe

ctive 100 1st Grade games in 2019.

The final acknowledgement of the night was the elevation of Chairman Ron ‘Chook’ Fowlie from Wall of Fame status to LEGEND #3 of the organisation.

In attendance along with former premiership players were a number of current day volunteers which have had an involvement since the early to mid-seventies including the likes of Wally Gisik, Col Imrie, Wally Thompson, Noel Miller, Steve Wightman, Gary Bullivant and Ron Fowlie along with Geoff Gosling and Alan McDonald traveling from interstate – both being heavily involved in those days with the acquirement of a Liquor License and  subsequent building of the Tigers Licensed Club.

An original Tigerette was in attendance, Berris Crossin played in the Tigerettes 1976 team and has supplied the footy club with some historic photos from those days including a team photo of the 76 team that won the premiership. Also, in attendance was one of the Clubs favorite Premiership players in Butch Hemming who was a participant of the famous 1985 1st Grade Premiership title.

It truly was a fantastic occasion. Full credit to those who assisted with the organisation during the day and evening and in the lead up to the event. Thank you to all those who traveled and thanks Walshie and Pav for all your efforts.

1st Grade Men’s

An intriguing game played out at Allinsure Park on Sunday with the Tigers Men’s 1st Grade kicking on in the last quarter to take the points against a competitive Eastlake combination. The Demons held sway early in the second term and look likely to take a firm grip on the game until a late surge by the Tigers placed the home team just two points up at the main break.

From there the Tigers held onto a slender lead for the balance of the game taking the match by 16 points. Had they been more direct in front of goal, the margin may have blown out, but it was the pressure of the Demons defence that caused many indirect attempts upon goal.

A strong crowd was bolstered by many former 100 game players in attendance to congratulate Andrew Swan on his 100th 1st Grade match for the Tigers. They witnessed an entertaining game throughout highlighted by Aidan Bowyer’s first 1st Grade game – Aidan being the son of former Tigers premiership player Ian.

Ever reliable Dean Simpson was creative down back even drifting into the forward line for a rare goal. Campbell Lovell showed his class throughout often sending the Tigers into attack. There were 10 goal kickers for the Tigers which indicates a wide spread of the ball among all players from the half back line.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

The Tigerettes continued their winning way with a comprehensive win over last years grand final opponents and premiers Eastlake. Unfortunately, it was a costly win with injuries to two-star players of the Tigerettes in Amy Morschel and Jackie Parry the latter posting 4 goals before having to leave the field. The seventy-point win has firmly established the Tigerettes on top of the ladder as they move into the second part of the season.

Playing under lights at Allinsure, the home team was best served by any number of players however there were standout performances by youngsters Jade Hamilton and Kate Woodward along with seasoned veterans Ella Ross and Hannah Dunn.

Under 18 Grade Rising Stars

The Tigers Rising Stars were well beaten on Sunday by Eastlake in the opening game at Allinsure Park a five-goal opening term by the Demons set the

tone for the day even though the Tigers restricted their opposition to just 2 points in the second quarter. Inaccuracy cost them in this term posting 1.4 for the quarter. After half time Eastlake certainly gained the upper hand and by three quarter time had a commanding lead of which they added to by the final siren.  Full marks to the young Tigers combination. They never stopped “having a go” and hopefully with a few players returning this weekend they may turn the tide after consecutive losses.

Unfortunately, another injury has severely dented the Tigers playing list, this time to Jarrod Barker. This promising youngster recently returned from injury only to be struck down with a reoccurring shoulder problem. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for the lad.

Some good performances from Jack Armstrong, Ben Purdon and Jomel Jackson-Pomare are encouraging signs among the likes of Jordon Gilbert and Jared Foley. The highlight of the game came from the smallest guy on the field – a flying Ollie Rowley over a pack of players just missing what would have been a contender for mark of the year.

Men’s Reserve Grade

The Tigers Reserve Grade lost their first game of the year to Eastlake Demons. After posting the first 4 goals of the game, they came tumbling down to a far superior Demons outfit. The undermanned Tigers team assisted by Mitch Taylor and Jack Manners (backing up from the Under 18 Grade) were far from impressive after the quarter time break posting just 1.8 for the remainder of the game while allowing the opposition to post 10 goals 8 points.

Hugh McKenzie, Bailey Greenwood and Jack Manners were standout players for the Tigers along with strong performances from Mitch Price, Ollie Hicks and Jake Kerr.

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

The Tigerettes Reserve Grade team traveled to Cootamundra on Saturday to take on the Coota Blues and came home convincing winners by 98 points. Full credit to the players who made the journey.  In near perfect conditions, the visitors outclassed an undermanned Cootamundra team having a firm hold on the game at half time. Jill Shea, Shaylee Dal Santo and Hayley Bowyer all posted three goals apiece and were adjudged among the best on the day. Jordan Barsley continues her improvement along with Jenna Williams and Julia Bedin.

A huge thank you to the volunteers who traveled to assist on the day. Their commitment to the task of providing the best for each team regardless of grade is outstanding and highly commended.

The Tigers notched 3 from 5 wins last weekend with wins in Men’s and Women’s 1st Grade and Men’s Reserve Grade.  The Tigers Under 18 Grade team went down to the Tuggeranong Hawks for the second time this season as did the Tigerettes Reserve Grade for the second time to the strong Riverina Lions combination.

However it was a train wreck in the senior men’s grades with both men’s 1sts & Res not being able to finish with a bench by the end of their games. Hopefully they aren’t serious in the wash up however the Tigers depth will be tested in the coming weeks!

Tigerettes Reserves

The Tigerettes Reserve Grade were hoping to provide strong opposition for competition leaders Riverina Lions at home, but except for the first quarter, they offered little resistance to a polished Lions combination.

Playing at home, the Tigerettes fielded a relatively strong combination but were no match as they Lions played constructive footy using many of their experienced players to advantage. Although holding a slender margin at the half time break, the Lions piled on the points as the game progressed eventually winning by 37 points. Lauren Flakelar was a “tower” of strength down back often repelling many attacking moves by Riverina.

Mon McGrath also provided strong opposition along with Lani Watson who has been playing with a very badly injured finger much to her credit.

Under 18 Grade Rising Stars

A depleted Tigers Under 18 Grade Rising Stars played the early match at Greenway Oval on Sunday in freezing conditions but they were dogmatic in every way.  Player unavailability and injuries have been the norm for this team all year and unfortunately that wont change for some time. But to their credit they battled hard against an improved opposition and went down fighting only in the last 10 minutes of the game.

The Tigers have gained a gun in Mitch Taylor.  The more we see of this lad, the better he will be and more importantly, the more opportunities he will have at playing higher up as he progresses. Hugh Clark was outstanding as was young Ben Purdon. They are both great prospects for senior teams in the future. Harrison Miller also played his best game for the year as did the dynamic Ollie Rowley.

This young team is progressing nicely. They have a real battle to make finals but hopefully with inclusions in the latter part of the season they may be provided a finals opportunity.

Tigers Men’s Reserve Grade

From a starting lineup one short of a full team, they were down more numbers within minutes of the game commencing. Harry Straker was a late withdrawal from the team and was not replaced. Ben Millynn broke his wrist and then Anthony Lopilato limped from the field.  Next to exit was Coach Alex Lawder with a serious injury requiring hospitalisation, so the Tigers played most of the match with 17 players.

Fortunately, the Tigers were able to cover the losses and were convincing victors over the Tuggeranong Hawks at Greenway. There were some excellence performances including that of Wilson Morshead. He has certain developed a strong physical game and pushed the Tigers into attacked on many occasions. Up forward the Club welcomed back Will Taylor for his first game of the season. Will being the Club and Leagues leading goal kicker in the Under 18 Grade last season. He didn’t fail on the weekend with 5 goals. An injury preseason has kept him sidelined until last Sunday and he

impressed with his strong marking ability.

Marcus Lawrence continues to push for senior grade selection, once again posting 4 goals. Ryan Worn at fullback also impresses as does Kyle Doherty with his hardness at the ball being a feature.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

Welcome back Hannah Dunn.

One of the Tigers favorite Tigerettes played her first game for the Club on Sunday against Tuggeranong Hawks after spending the last 6 months in Adelaide playing for Norwood of the SANFWL.

A former Captain and Best and Fairest winner Hannah fitted back nicely into this talented team and will certainly be an asset as the balance of the season unfolds. No-one was more pleased to see Hannah return other than her best Tigerettes mate in Ella Ross. Ella showed the way by posting 5 goals in the team’s e

emphatic win over Tuggeranong Hawks in the late game at Greenway Oval.

Other notable performances were from the Hamilton sisters Jade and Lexie plus Ruby Grounds, Strama and Captain elite, Carly Res.

Men’s 1st Grade

The Tigers battled hard against a very competitive Tuggeranong Hawks combination who never gave an inch throughout an entertaining match.   The scores may indicate an easy victory for the Tigers, but it was far from that.

There were some strong performers for the Tigers.

The “Old Timer” Toby Conroy seems to be ageless amongst this team as he “strides” around the ground at will picking up disposal after disposal.

Lachy Highfield was prominent until injured. Liam Greenwell has continued his good form of recent times. Brandon Lagana played his 50th Club match and was another to impress.

Up forward Matt Grocott and Tim Clowry provided plenty of opportunities while the return of Jack Carroll-Tape after long term injury and a few starts in the Reserves is sure to be a bonus as the season unfolds.
