Good Start to Women’s Year!

The Queanbeyan Tigers Women’s team have had their first hit out for 2011 playing ADFA on Tuesday night.

The team featured 14 players returning from the Tigers inaugural season last year and six new players. Congrats to Matilda Delchau, Tate Freeman, Clarice Huston, Maddi Skinner, Bianca Solar and Shay Thomas on turning out in the yellow and black for the first time.

All of the new players showed a lot of potential – Tate showing promise as a key forward, Shay playing well across half back before showing her soccer skills when moved forward to kick a goal late in the game, Bianca and Maddi showing plenty of natural ability despite both having a very limited preparation and youngsters Clarice and Matilda both showing an ability to find the ball.

What was really exciting for the Tigers was some of the performance of the second year players. Amy McLenaghan was a stand out on the wing showing both great levels of physicality and much improved skills. Jane Vucago, on the other wing, was another who performed well on the night highlighted by a long run that included a couple of bounces and her creative running into the forward line.

Up forward Fran Langi was very good at Centre Half Forward providing a target and a voice helped by the second efforts of Bobbie Minniecon and Michelle Hansen who both showed they have benefited from last years experience and another pre-season.

Dani Louis and Amanda Oosterweghel were also very solid as the key defenders and the Tigers midfield of Hannah Dunn, Tegan Tisma, Sarah Van Meurs and Kristen Turner worked well in combination and won the midfield battle in a close points decision.

The team will benefit enormously from a good competitive hit out and now look forward to travelling to Cooma to compete in the Cooma Carnival on Saturday 19th.

The season proper starts on Saturday 2 April with the Tigers facing an opening round trip to Wagga. The team is still looking for a few new recruits so if you are interested in playing this season contact the club (details) or coach Dave Matthews on 0403828584 ASAP.
