Rocky Start for Tigers Women.

Our Tigerette's before Round 1.

Despite a tough start to the year the Queanbeyan Women’s Team is still getting good numbers to training and are improving every week. Please see below Rounds 1 and 2 match reports / photos:

ROUND 2 v Eastlake

The Tigers Ladies team played their second match of the season last week but unfortunately went down to a far more experienced Eastlake combination. Eastlake won the match 16.25 (121) to Queanbeyan 1.1(7).

Goals: Gez Croke Best: Sarah Van Meurs, Hannah Dunn, Gez Croke, Fran Langi, Dani Louis

It has been a tough start to the season after a loss in the first round to the Riverina team in Wagga. There were two more debutantes to add to the nine from Round 1 – Maddi Skinner and Tracey Mosely who both played well.

The Tigerettes best on the day were Sarah Van Meurs on ball, Hannah Dunn batting a lone hand in the ruck against multiple opponents, Gez playing forward and rotating through the midfield and Dani and Fran in defence the latter making a very welcome return to the team.

The Tigerettes never gave up and their effort was rewarded during the last quarter when they were able to put a score on the board. Shay Thomas just missing with a long bomb before second gamer Gez Croke kicked a clever snap mid way through the final term.

The Tigerettes attitude remains fantastic. Numbers at training are very good and there are plenty of positive signs that suggest the Tigerettes will continue to improve throughout the season if they can remain healthy.

Next week we take on the Gungahlin Jets at Amaroo Oval on Saturday at Noon.

Sports Trainer Wendy Downing has been a huge help for our girls team.

ROUND 1 v Riverina

Riverina 21.14(140) d Queanbeyan 0.0 (0)

Best Players: Hannah Dunn, Roni Jordan, Dani Louis, Bobbie Minniecon, Tess Kolaric, Tegan Tisma

The Tigerettes have started the season with a big loss – being totally outgunned by a classy Riverina team. A first up away trip to Wagga is always tough, but even more so when you have nine players on debut.

Congratulations to Gez Croke, Matilda Delchau, Tate Freeman, Madeleine Griffin, Clarice Huston, Veronica Jordan, Bianca Solar, Shay Thomas and Lani Watson on making their official debuts for the club.

Of the debutantes Veronica (Roni) was the stand out playing in defence and close our best before going down with a knee injury early in the fourth term. All of the other new players showed that with a bit of time and hard work they will have plenty to offer in season 2011.

Elsewhere Hannah Dunn battled gamely all day against arguably the best ruck in the comp and Tess and Tegan tried hard to help her in the midfield. All of the defenders tried their all with newly appointed co-captain Dani Louis leading the way and Bobbie Minniecon also playing well despite receiving a few knocks to the head for her efforts.

The team will need to regroup quickly as they take on traditional women’s powerhouse Eastlake at Football Park Phillip in Round 2. Match starts at 10am on Saturday 9th April at Football Park Phillip.
