Strong Games for all Five Grades Last Weekend

Queanbeyan came away with three wins from 5 games last weekend with wins being achieved over Eastlake in Men’s 1st and Reserve Grade and the

Tigerettes 1st Grade. The Tigerettes Reserves went down by 8 points to the 2018 Reserve Grade Premiers Riverina Lions while a very depleted Rising Stars were outclassed by a strong Eastlake Demons combination.

Men’s 1st Grade

The Tigers return to Football Park, (for only the “second” time since their 2000 AFL Canberra 1st Grade Premiership victory) resulted in an exceptional win over Eastlake Demons in the Men’s 1st Grade game.

Played in windy conditions not favoring either end of the ground, the game was a hard-fought win for the Tigers. Eastlake were favorites for the match coming off a strong 2018 season which seen them play off against Ainslie in last year’s Grand Final.

After a slow start to the game enabling Eastlake to take the lead at the first change, the Tigers worked their way into the match taking the lead at half time, and then going on with the game through to the final siren. The loss of dynamic forward Brett Fruend early in the second quarter unsettled the team but they certainly rallied with strong defence and their attack on the footy.

Collectively, the Tigers defended superbly through the final three quarters limiting Eastlake to just 2.5 after quarter time while posting 8.7 themselves. Dean Simpson was outstanding as was his partner in crime Jono Bowyer at fullback. Matt Bernasconi for the second week in a row was terrific in defence along with the ever-reliable Alec McCormick. Up forward Mat Grocott provided a strong leading target including a superb one hander. Toby Conroy was dynamic and industrious all day.

This Saturday at Kippax Oval, they take on the might of Belconnen Magpies at 1.15pm, a team renown for protecting their home turf.   The match against Eastlake has certainly taken its toll injury wise, so the Tigers depth will be at its maximum for this important clash.

Tigerettes 1st Grade

The last game on a full day of footy at Football Park provided many highlights but no more so than the emphatic way the Tigerettes 1st Grade team

demolished their Grand Final opponents of 2018. From the outset, Queanbeyan were determined and spirited.

They banged and crashed their way forward, surging the ball at will and took chances when they presented.  Several goals were scored from full length of the ground movement highlighting just how far Women’s footy has progressed in recent years.  It would have been pleasing for the hard-working band of coaches associated with the Tigers Women’s program.

Cass Taylor, Georgia Stephinson, Jayde Hamilton and Jess Stramandinoli were outstanding with their attack and run. At fullback, Tegan Tisma was dogged in defence.  It really was a strong all-round performance by all players, and they should be congratulated on the manner they play and in the way, they present themselves each game.

This Saturday they take on Belconnen at Kippax Oval at 3.45pm. The Magpies had a comprehensive win over Tuggeranong last weekend, so this week’s game should be a cracker.

Tigers Men’s Reserve Grade

Anyone witnessing this game could have thought the score reflected a soccer match such was the low scoring of the game.   It doesn’t rank as one of the

best games, but it was intriguing to say the least.

Very little separated the two teams as they fought their way towards 25 points to 20 victory for the Tigers over the Demons.  Scoring goals was a rarity and unusual for teams with an abundance of talent on display.   Regular senior grade players Jason Taylor, Jed Simpson, Scott Lancaster, Jack Carroll-Tape, Marcus Lawrence, Jordan Hedington and Mitch Price should all press for a return to the senior grade in coming weeks as will youngster Ollie Hicks, newcomer Ryan Worn and big Justin Galloway.

This week they take on Belconnen Magpies at 11.00am at Kippax Oval.

Tigerettes Reserve Grade

The Tigerettes Reserve Grade traveled to Wagga last Saturday to take on the might of the Riverina Lions, being a representation of players from

around the region.  The young Tigerettes outfit were up for the challenge and fought courageously throughout the match to go down fighting by just 8 points.

The Lions were last year’s Reserve Grade Premiers and were well in control of the match at half time with 10 scoring shots to just one by the Tigerettes. After the main break however, the visitors started to put a few points on the board and were unlucky not sneak an away victory over the highly regarded Lions outfit.

Best for the Tigers was the experienced Lani Watson. The name McGinley is prominent in Tigers history so its fantastic to have Soraya playing in the Tigers colours this year and doing well being named in the best last Saturday.

Soraya’s father Jamie being a former Tigers Reserve Grade Premiership Coach, and grandmother Di being heavily involved over many years on match days in the canteen and supplying meals on Thursday nights.

The Tigerettes play Cootamundra on Saturday at Allinsure Park, the game commencing at 1pm.

Tigers Rising Stars

Unfortunately, the Tigers Under 18 Grade were well defeated by the undefeated Eastlake Demons in the early game at Football Park. Eastlake proved too strong across the park, as the young Tigers outfit battled on courageously. Best for the Tigers included birthday lad Jordan Gilbert celebrating his 16th Birthday. Caleb Cawse played his best game to date and he along with Josh Fahey and Ollie Rowley were strong throughout the day.

This side is hopeful of a few players returning from being unavailable this week to bolster the team in what will be an important clash against the Belconnen Magpies at Kippax on Saturday commencing at 9.30am.
