The inaugural Queanbeyan Tigers ladies team season is over after going down fighting against the Gungahlin Jets in their elimination final on the weekend. The ‘Tigerettes’ competed hard and never gave up trying but were ultimately beaten by the better team on the day.

In a typically tight and low scoring game the Tigers back six of Pip Butt, Rach Short, Amanda Oosterweghel, Chrisie Bourbous, Dani Louis and Kristen Turner did what they have done for most of the season and that’s make it very difficult for the opposition to score. In fact the Tigers had the chance to take the lead early in the second quarter however Davina Harris’ snap was unluckily touched off the boot. A goal to the Jets from a Tigers skill error/turn over resulted in an eight point deficit at half time.

The third quarter has been a bit of a problem all year for the Tigers and although the midfield – Hannah Dunn, Jacinta Froud, Tegan Tisma and Sarah Van Meurs – battled gamely the Jets slowly got on top thanks to some of their long kicking and were able to score twice from stoppages close to goal although the Tigers can consider themselves a little unlucky as the first goal was touched off the boot by Shorty and the second involved a very unlucky shepherd from the umpire. Facing their last quarter for the season the Tigers lifted for one last effort – Jane Vucago on the wing noticeably going as strong at the end as at the start. The Tigers tried desperately to get a score but the Jets backline were too strong. Both defences were on top however another long bomb to the top of the square gave the Jets their final goal with about 4 minutes left on the clock and made the final margin 29 points.

The Tigerettes have come a very long way in their first season. To win their last two home and away games and then to be more than competitive in a less than five goal loss to the 5th ranked team in the competition is an effort the group can be proud of. A big thanks goes to all of the volunteers that have helped put out the team this year – our wonderful manager – Mrs V, our dedicated sports trainers Judy and Wendy, Mark our ‘roustabout’ goal umpire/water runner/bbq guy, our timekeeper Nick and everyone else that has come out and supported the team.

Pre-season plans are already in the works and the Tigerettes, with all of the benefits from their 2010 experience, will be back a much better prepared football team ready to make an impact on the 2011 season.
