Tigers – NEAFL

Aspley Hornets bounced back to the winners list last Saturday with a comfortable 50 point win over the Tigers in the NEAFL clash at Dairy Farmers Park.

It was the only loss from four encounters at the Tigers home ground with convincing wins to the Tigers Under 18 Grade Rising Stars over Gungahlin and strong victories over ANU in the Ladies and AFL Canberra 1st Grade matches.

Those victories place the teams at the top of their respective competitions with the NEAFL team in 11th of the 14 team competition.

However much can be taken from the Tigers NEAFL teams performance with a competitive game against the Queenslanders – a team highly regarded to finish well up the NEAFL ladder by seasons end.

The Tigers woeful kicking for goal has continued with an abysmal 2. 12 posted when kicking with the breeze.

It was a determined effort with an abundance of new faces in the team that will take time to gel but we have already seen (since the opening round) an enormous improvement and this can only gain momentum as we progress into the season.

The Tigers best were mainly backline players (Dave Smith, Liam Greenwell and Andrew Swan) however the performance of Jarrod Atkinson is a pleasing sign with strong performances throughout the opening rounds of the year.

Round 5 of the NEAFL has the Tigers playing Eastlake at Manuka Oval next Sunday at 2.00pm, the Demons being defeated by Southport last week at Football Park.Queanbeyan2.0-124.7-316.9-456.14-50Aspley5.2-328.4-5212.8-8015.10-100

Tigers Under 18 Grade Rising Stars

Gungahlin Jets were great competitors in their encounter with the Tigers Under 18 Grade in the early fixture match at DFP last Saturday. After missing the competition last year most were expecting the JETS to struggle but that was far from the case with a strong and competitive performance by the youngsters from across the border. Inaccuracy cost them in the second term. Had that been reversed then the Tigers could have had a few problems.

The Tigers were once again led well by Captain Brandon Lagana along with leading goalkicker Matthew Grocott. Young Jeramey Edwards posted two goals and looks a likely prospect in the future along with Zac Douch and Josh McGovern.

Tigerettes – Ladies

The Tigerettes played the final match of the day last Saturday – a replay of last years Grand Final finishing under lights at DFP in front of a strong and vocal group of Tiger players and officials. They were far too strong on this occasion for the Students posting 81 points to a zero score.

It was an amazing performance by Ella Ross during which she dominated proceedings in only her second game of footy (ever). Her uncanny ability to read the play and dispose of the ball has already caught the eye of possible representative selection.

Lani Watson posted three goals in a strong performance while Hannah Dunn and former Best and Fairest winner Melissa Hurley were also prominent throughout the encounter.

The Tigerettes next match is against ADFA but unfortunately the cadets may be unavailable for this clash scheduled for Saturday. The game, time and venue will be advised asap.Queanbeyan3.18.510.712.9-81ANU0.00.00.00.0
